Araucana thread anyone?

from what i'm told tailed offspring can pop up in pure stock because rumpless is dominant. some breeders tell me they prefer the tailed because they breed better, or others say they keep a percentage of tailed stock in their flock to keep fertility high but also apparently it helps keep the rumpless ones from getting too short. I'm new to the actual breed (had had some crosses in the past) so i wouldnt know, but this is what i've been told. I'm not sure that i will show them or not, so if all the chicks dont hatch out with ear tufts it wont break my heart, but the tail-lessness is my favorite trait of this bird, the eggs are nice too haha.
Thanks

Hi syble,

I tried to pm you and no go also. I have hatching eggs out of my splash and blue pen. I did start getting tails this fall even though all the birds are rumpless. It was weird. All year no tails out of that pen, then tadah!! half are tailed. I do get about 30% tufted out of that pen and I get splash, barred, cuckoo, and duckwing. You can email me at [email protected]

There are breeders who have tailed birds in their flock to help with fertility and they may have a tailed tufted bird that is perfect except for type, so why not breed to it. It is up to each person. Remember that one of the original breeds that make up the araucana was tailed. Its really not that big of a deal. I do not have tailed birds in my flock. I do have a rumpless roo that has 3 tail feathers but he is rumpless. They are extended tail folicles. Even will all my rumpless birds I do get tails, mostly this fall. Not sure why.

Ann,

So getting a duckwing out of a crow wing is possible since brad was a duckwing. That is exciting news for me. I love my new guy and have high hopes for him. I don't understand the genetics either. It was just going by the chicken calculator and duckwings never came up when I put a birchen in as one parent and a duckwing in as the other. They all came up birchen.

I don't know what to say everyone, i was able to pm myself? and i checked my settings, you can send me an e-mail thought the forum as well, but if that still doesn't work send me an e-mail directly. [email protected] I'm glad to see that some have some to offer. My primary interest is in blues, splashes (and blacks are just part of the package), I wouldn't be opposed to other solid colors too, I think i'd like to avoid patterns as much as possible (like birchen or duckwings). I don't mind ending up with the odd one in a hatch and breeding out the pattern to solids, i'm fine with that. I just find its a complex enough bird to work with without having to worry about patterning and proportion of color.
Thanks
Sib.

I am trying to make myself a coffee table book about araucanas. I would love it if anyone had nice pics of their araucana they would email me. I will reference acknowledge you and your birds if I use the picture. I would really appreciate. I want to take the book to poultry shows to show people about the araucana and that they make wonderful backyard chickens.

My email is [email protected]

Lanae, you never cease to amaze me. I have some photos on my web site on the "Chicks and Chickens for sale page." If you like any of those, I'd be delighted to send them to you. What a wonderful idea a book is!

Of course, I don't have very many tufts running around right now, and a book for showing off the breed would really need to showcase the TUFTS!. Gosh, Illia's birds have some really cool tufts, and I know Ann has some insanely cool patterned birds, and, well, wow, there have just been so many fantastic photos on this thread from so many different people.

You take much better photos than I do. Just send me a couple of pics you like best. I definately would like tufted and rumpless but will be putting cleanfaced in the book also.
