Araucana thread anyone?

I honestly don't know, but I'm thinking duckwing with something else thrown in there, and some melanizer. Whatever she is, I'm going to risk pairing her with this guy, who's of course also tufted. (though his tufts aren't coming back until he molts)

He's got Columbian and Blue in there, so that will make a wish-wash of colors at first, but I'll be working at it from there. . . So where I can go. At some point I'd really, really like some new blood in here though.

Golly Ilia! I know you've posted that photo of the hen before and I have seen her already, but it's still just shocking to scroll down and see those unbelievable tufts and that gorgeous little Araucana body of hers. She really does look like a painting, especially those patterned tufts; I would love a framed photo of that bird on my wall over the mantel! She is beautiful.

Yes, she's my FAVORITE of all the girls, though I do love some others. . .

Like this girl, who's just amazing in body, but her tufts are what throw me off. One of them sags down entirely. And I don't have any good photos of her yet.

Right now though, Josephine (the previous pictured pullet) is molting and looks awful!!

Right now this is my personal favorite pullet except she is not tufted.

I do have a 2 month old pullet that is colored just like her and appears to be shaped like her and has two really nice tufts, but I have given her to the young man who gave me my new roo.

It gives me hope that I will get more like that out of that pen that are tufted.

Ah, do I ever love BYC. Whenever I have a chicken question I know just where to go.

I got some Araucana in the summer. I've had terrible luck with these birds and have lost quite a few over the winter.

I am left with a tufted pullet (partially tailed), a clean faced rumpless pullet, a clean faced tailed black pullet and a white muffed pullet. The muffed lady is going bye bye but now I am left with these three girls and the choice of either a rumpless roo or a tufted roo. I have a black roo with red in him who has tufts and also a pure white roo with tufts. My rumpless roo is my favourite, his colours are stunning which is why I am leaning towards keeping him. I was originally going to have two breeding pens (tufted to rumpless and vice versa) but it seems a little silly now to have two groups for three pullets. My plan is to breed the rumpless to the girls, hopefully get a tufted rumpless roo off the tufted girl and use that for my next generation.

Any thoughts? I would love to post pics but my memory card is on the fritz. Also the stock I got from had more tails than I would like so that is another reason I was thinking of going rumpless first then breeding for tufts once I get some good rumpless stock going. Does this sound like a good plan?

cluckcluck, what are your goals with your flock? I'm confused, from your description, it sounded like you had 3 roosters. If you're looking at getting a good set of offspring for the next season, i would consider splitting them into pairs. I would put the rumpless roo with the tuffted partially tailed hen, and i would put the cleanfaced rumpless pullet with the tufted tailed male. Pictures of course make this easier hehe

I would put the tufted roo in with the rumpless pullet and cull hard for only those without tails. Don't worry about color.

I would then put the rumpless roo with the other too. I would cull for tails also. Then you have the next gen to mix and match. keep culling for tails, definately keep anything rumpless untill at least 6 months when you can start to look at them for breeding.
