Araucana thread anyone?

Whats the difference between an Americauna and aracauna.....I have one or the other but I am not sure which one......

araucanas are tailess and have ear tufts, ameracaunas have tails, but no tufts, instead they have muffs and beard.

I am doing good in the blue department. I have had 3 hatch last week and 2 this week. Next week I only have my ginger red pen hatching. I took all my splash eggs to the Humboldt Poultry show and raffled them off.

Most of my good blues come out of my splash pen. I will have to wait and see what this year brings from my blue pen.

I just had a black chick hatch today, an early bird so to speak

since they aren't supposed to hatch till tomorrow. They all candled good but you know how that goes sometimes.....except Lanae

I think this one is tufted but it's not fluffed up yet. It's from the pen that has the new ones and I'm hoping it was from my really nice, big double tufted black hen, the egg was a really pretty "blue" color.

I took some new one's of the chicks in the brooder, here is that "red" chick. I'm liking red...I wouldn't mind another one. I have a tentative name chosen for this one of "Red" but if it keeps getting in those vibrant red feathers, I may have to change it to Flame.

Here is the one I'm thinking and hoping is a pullet. I love the color on this one.

I hope that is helpful. If you have EE's or Ameraucana's, don't depair. They're really cool too. If you want some Araucana's, definitely hang out here and you should find a few for sale to help you get started.

Aw poop,

I was hoping because of all the really rounded rump feathering that it was a pullet but I really did figure it to be a cockerel because of how big and stout it is. So will all those stripey looking feathers moult out and come back in duckwing?? We really need some chick down to first feathers to adult feathering photo's here. It would be nice to see those progressions in the colors to make identification easier and earlier.

The chick in the incubator is black with a speck of yellow over each eye, like teeny eyebrows, yellow wingtips and under the chin then again on the lower chest/belly/undersides. I can't remember the significance of yellow on a black chick that helps identify the sex. Do you know that one?

I was given what the lady called a pure bred Ameraucana rooster. When I went to pick him up, I was SHOCKED at what I saw. Rumpless with ear muffs, reddish brown and black, but supposedly it had white tail feathers, but she said her kids had pulled them out trying to catch him. I looked at pictures on this thread and other sources and I'm sure he is actually a Araucana not a Ameraucana. Which is fine with me, I wanted him to put in with my hens hoping to get more blue egg layers. I have 2 EEs that lay a light blue eggs as well as some other EEs that do not lay blue eggs. I just put him in with my hens last night as he appeared to be healthy after several days in isolation. The lady told me he came from a private breeder not a hatchery. I plan to start up the incubator in about a month and set some of the eggs, especially from the blue egg layers, but also some of the other hens as well.

Can anyone tell me how long he needs to be in with my hens to be sure the eggs could be fertile by him? I had a couple EE roosters in there and also a Jersey Giant, but I took them all out when I put the Araucana roo in, because I just want him to be the male contributer. Also, how many days can I collect eggs before putting them in the incubator? the last actually first batch i hatched only had about 3/4 hatch rate, but I only used eggs from about three days? I'd like to collect at least a dozen blue eggs from those two hens and wonder if collecting for about a week is too long. How should I handle the eggs, refrigerate? Keep them out where its room temperature? If need be, I can re-ask the question in the incubating/hatching section, but I figured anyone who has Araucana chickens probably is also into breeding and hatching eggs.
