Araucana thread anyone?

I had a roo that didn't do more than get wing feathers for 2 months. It was the strangest thing. He was very redish chipmonky, then feathered out a blue breasted red.

He wasn't smaller than the others just slower.

Gosh, Illia, that splash rooster of yours on the bid site is caaaaaaalllllllling to me; too bad I spent all of my money on the incubator. I would bid on that boy in a heart beat if I had anything to bid!

Spent a snowy, windy evening trying to drag bantam Araucanas down from the tree tops to get them into their breeding pens. Managed to get three of the girls down. By golly can they shreek like banshees!! Wild little darlings. I am so ready to get that gorgeous bantam rooster making tufted chicks!!! Last year was a fertility disaster, so fingers crossed that this new fellow has got what it takes.

Beautiful Bantam roo Megan. If you are talking about sky blue eggs website, thats my boy. He is really very pretty.

My second hatch of the season is underway and I have another black chick out of my splash pen hatching. I am not sure how that is happening. My understanding is you can't get black out of splash. If anyone has any thoughts let me know.

So far this batch, I have two chipmonks out of my new ginger red pen. I am so thrilled. I have 1 splash, 1 blue, and 1 black out of the splash pen. One of the ginger red pen chicks is tufted.

Huh, yeah, splash x splash should be all splash; it means, as I understand it, that both parents carry two copies of the blue gene and thus there is no black gene to alter to blue...... so, huh, I would love to hear an explanation because I don't see how it's happening.

Me either. But I have a pretty fool proof system. The splash roo is in a chicken tractor with a blue hen, a black hen, and a splash hen. The black hen just started laying. Her eggs still have blood on them and they each lay a fairly distinct egg so its pretty easy to see who lays what. Last week I got a double tufted black and this week another black. All eggs are marked as I pull them out of each pen with the color of the pen. These chicks are hatching out of eggs marked splash.

Here is the roo:

I posted about my spash roo on the Araucana club and there is a possibility that he is a dominant white instead of a splash, which is why I am getting black chicks out of his pen. That was exciting to hear. I have been scratching my head wondering how it is possible.

So my second hatch in my LG incubators is complete, I had 7 out of 8 Araucana hatch last week, and 7 out of 8 Araucana and 1 marans hatch this weekend. I only have two araucana, and 2 marans set to hatch next weekend. But after that I should have between 8 and 12 araucan hatching every weekend. That is all I can set for myself with the hatching egg orders I have. So far that is a much better hatch rate than I expected.

My cheap little heart is very happy, untill I can save enough to get a sportsman. I asked my husband and he approved the purchase, but it has to be paid for with bird money. So I have to sell hatching egg and birds to get it. That seems fair to me.
