Araucana thread anyone?

Puredelite, it looks to me like you have a splash roo and a dominant white or a red pyle colored roo.

Handsome boy. Magnificent tuft!

Well, I have a second Araucana chick hatched and wouldn't you know it - Double tufted and rumples also! Funny. The first chick was last weeks only fertile egg out of 12 and I was sure that it wouldn't hatch and was blown away when, not only did it make it out, but tufted and rumples as well! Well, here we go again. Today's little one was the only fertile egg out of 6 that I set, but woohoo!! I guess I will have to do some trimming. I wanted to keep the breeding process as natural as possible, but one fertile egg out of six is just too pathetic to leave alone. Of course, there is incentive now that I see what my birds are capable of making together!

I know that it is early yet, but anyone else out there planning to go to the Stockton California January poultry show? I am bending over backwards to make a trip possible on my end and want to take full advantage. I plan to come with money to buy BBS stock if at all possible. Or, I would love to pay for birds as they mature between now and then and then pick up either at the show or anywhere between California and the trip back to Montana.

I got back too late last night to post photo's of my latest 3 chicks. They hatched Monday. The day trip to see the house my niece is buying was a sunny, nice day to be out but we drove home through a huge storm, lol. We only had 2 detours because of flooding but it wasn't a problem. We visited with her real estate guys then stopped in to visit with the Veterinarian she was just hired by and they are just awesome, 2 hours away from me but we had several friends in common (Vets and others) so it was a nice visit and my niece has a great "new boss". The house was charming and already has a 10 by 12 foot chicken barn! Perfect for Tiffany!

I put these new chicks in the brooder this morning and the scrawny lil guy was ravenous! He was trying to eat everything, lol. There were 5 to hatch and 3 hatched and I think all three are tufted and rumpless
big_smile.png
The first to hatch was a robust, large fluffy chipmunk striped chick (cockerel? eye stripe below center?) The second to hatch was the black chick, rumpless and I think I'm seeing tufts. The last to hatch is a scrawny lil scrapper. Smaller than the other 2, definitely double tufted and rumpless and probably cockerel? (check out the eye stripe) but not sure what this color is, BBR? This chick has ticking on his down, like a squirrel. He's got chipmunk striping but definitely a different color than the other chipmunks I've hatched. No names yet.....except the last chick has been dubbed Scrapper.

Chick 1 - this chick would Not open his eyes for the camera, lol cockerel? duckwing?

Chick 2 - possible tufts, if I'm correct and I'm not sure, they're on both sides

Seems like I've been hatching a lot of black chicks but this is the first one with even "possible" tufts

Good to hear you made it through your trip safely; crazy weather you guys are getting.

Three dble tufted, rumples babies? Show off.

They look awesome. I can never remember if the eye strip gender determining trick only works for certain color combos, or breeds, or what it is. What are the secrets to using that technique?

Lanae,
Your Araucana's get better everytime I see them! Love that white roo, I have to say how happy I am to see so many breeders getting the bug and really working on them to improve and produce and "sell" to others! I'm on the waiting list for some hatching eggs from Jody and I am really loving hatching these guys. My hatch rate will get better, I think, once I separate the tufted to tufted breedings. I can't seem to get anything done in this weather yet so I'm trying to be patient and just waiting to put together a second breeding pen for these guys for a pen with all tufted roosters and all clean faced hens and vice versa. Heck, it may be fall before I can set things up for color pens but I'll get there and by next spring, I'll have everything in order for sure.

Megan,

I will be in Stockton and can't wait to meet you. See you there. I will refine my BBRs between now and then. I usually bring birds to sell. I did well last time I went.

Lanae,
I think Nadine commented that the stripe from the center of the eye is a pullet and below the center is a cockerel. I'm not at all certain if that's just for a certain color chick or any chick with an eye stripe though.
I'm not certain that chick 1 is double tufted but there's one big tuft for sure and a possible smaller on the opposite side. I can't be sure on the black chick. The black chicks with the white tufts stand out so nice but if they're black, they're really hard to see.
What do you think about Scapper's color?

Cute chicks, everyone! - But that one double tufted chick, wow, that is a looker!

And it is confirmed. . . My splash girl is brooding on 100% infertile eggs.

- I'll have to be extra cautious and wary next time about when and where she starts to sneakily lay her eggs after being bred. And somehow get a chance to breed her PLENTY before she goes broody.

Scapper is a BBR indeed. Gender is unknown.

The first one is indeed a duckwing cockerel.

funny that both chicks look like they are part blue, but neither had blue chick down... must be a trick of the color of something? same shade as the solid blue? Thoughts?

Thanks

I missed this post somehow. Thank you puredelite! We are at one week old today and so far the little monster is charging around "queen" of the brooder box. I have heard so many stories about the dbl tufteds dying young, and I remember getting my box of chicks with four dble tufted and bouncing through the roof in joy - only to have all but one die in the next few days. I didn't lose a single clean faced chick, just the tufted. I'm as prepared as I can be. Just taking it in while I can.
