Araucana thread anyone?

Heck, my hens ate the normal screen along with the bugs.
I second hardware mesh (I forget who suggested it). It is much sturdier than the chicken wire.
Also, I learned the hard way that just using construction staples won't hold the mesh, they will pop out. Battens screwed onto the mesh and through to the frame of the run or coop is more secure, but also more expensive.

Good luck, and I am sorry for your loss! I think we've all been in your shoes at least once. It sucks.

So sorry for your loss

Hi guys,
It's finally cooling down here and we're making a trip out to see our grandkids in MD on the east coast so I'm listing some groups of chicks available for sale on the Skyblueegg site and if anyone is on our route out there, they can pick them up on August 18th or 19th (depending on if we drive straight through or spend the night in Virginia somewhere) as we pass through. We can't go off our path to meet you but it would save shipping costs and the shipping box. I'm going to post them on Saturday morning, August 13th, and the auction will be completed on Monday morning. Payment by paypal only and they will have to be paid for by Monday evening so I can plan to have them ready to take along. The ones that will be shipped may be held till we return from our trip if I can't get boxes to ship them soon enough. Cost to ship will be actual post office cost plus the shipping box. They will be in groups that will fit into a shipping box so at least 3 or 4 will be in each group. I may include some hatching eggs in the boxes with the ones sold but since not everyone has an incubator or broody hen, that will be up to the buyer if they want them.

Here is where they will be listed, it does require you to register and the only way I take payment is Paypal anyway.
http://showbirdauction.com/ Once you register there, you can sign up to be notified anytime there are birds added to sell. It's not a multi-breed site so 90% are Araucana's.

PM me with your phone number if you have any questions about our trip path from SW Missouri to Patuxent River, MD. and I'll call you back. Most of these chicks are not sexed, a few are and those will be listed that way. I am also planning to sell some older chicks and possibly some of my laying hens to make more room for all these chicks I've held back for next year. There will be most colors, all are rumpless with a couple of exceptions and they will be noted in the ad, a few are tufted. I'll probably group them by color and I have some really good blues in this group. I will regroup when I get back from the trip and should have hatching eggs listed there later this summer/fall too.

I had the pleasure of spending about an hour on the phone with Smoothmule (Cathy) today. I am so fortunate to be new to araucanas and have someone close by who is so willing to share. Someone who is truely concerned about the advancement of the breed. She could have very easily dismissed me and my little pair of araucana, but did not. Thank you Thank you Thank you Cathy!!!

Illia, So where did the barring come from?? How neat to see how he has changed as he aged!! What do your cuckoo pullets look like and can we see a picture of their true blue eggs?
PS
The chickens had salmon for dinner tonight and loooooved it!!!!

Hey, quick questions, is anyone else a member of the Araucana Club of America? Is it worth it? Did you get the ACA membership with PDF newsletter delivery or actual hard copy?

My barred birds came from Gary Ramey's flock; I have no clue where it originated before that, but I know he wasn't the only one with it. Ann Charles (skyblueegg) also had a few barred Araucanas, too.

These are my girls. Both blue and splash.

The eggs, comparing to other blues. I don't know if this shows it very well, actually. These are old images, and they may just seem kinda gray, but, through all the eggs laid here they are the most consistent blue.

Ignore the nasty colored ones - the Blue Cuckoo are the 3rd and 5th column in each photo. The 4th column is from another "bluest layer," my girl Josephine -

She's broody right now though,

for some babies to hatch out because she's been broody about 4 times in her ooh year of life now, and nothing has come out of it except a few crossbreds. The daddy is this guy, Marango. Both are duckwing based, so I should get some variety duckwings (some with columbian, some with melanizer, some with other stuff in there)

I get my newsletter as a PDF file on my computer.

Rumbull, You are welcome

We need a lot of breeders that are as interested as you are

Suzannski, I don't really remember?? I log on automatically but it's either smoothmule or cathill

Norma, I am so sorry. You need a good dog

I have "the" best farm dog in the world but he's getting older. I couldn't find one like him so I got a female blue heeler and bred her to a working type australian shepherd male. My dog is out of this type cross although both of his parents were registered and from world grand champion field trial dogs. Sam bites possums in half with one big chomp. He kills possums, raccoons, skunks etc and leaves the body on the front porch (gotta love him for his work though). He's even taken down coyotes but hasn't killed one but they don't come back. Between him and the mules...nothing gets to my birds. As a bonus, he will lay quietly as the free range hens, turkeys and guineas clean out his dog food. Kind of expensive so I try to feed him late in the evening.
