Araucana thread anyone?

Our chicks are growing out so nicely. Quick question would you consider this a Cuckoo or a Blue Cuckoo?

This is my little Araucana chick that hatched last week. It has a tuft on each side. The white tuft on the right is larger than the black tuft on the left. It is rumpless, too. Last summer I bought some Araucana chicks, and one of them looked a lot like this one. That one turned out to be a solid black pullet. No white at all on her now. So I'm wondering if that is common for chicks to have white when hatched but end up being solid black later. Are the splotchy legs on this one a negative? I need to read more about the SOP for Araucanas.

This one should feather out solid black. If a roo depending on what its parents colors are, there could be some color bleed thru on the shoulders.

Shannon, she is adorable. I would just call it a cuckoo and a messy cuckoo at that, probably the influence of the splash in its background.

Beautiful chick. Reminds me a lot of our chick who hatched out last year. Here is her chick pic:

You can see how her legs changed into a solid slate color. She has the desired yellow soles.

I would love to see photos as your baby there grows up.

So, I have some not so good news. This chick pictured isn't doing so well. The other four are growing, very active, and doing normal chick things. This one, not so much. The chick is the same size since the day it hatched. It just isn't eating on its own. I've seen it drink, just not eat. Whenever I pick it up, the crop is empty. So I've been feeding it by dipping its beak in a soupy mixture of molasses, warm water, and the smooshed up yolk of a hard boiled egg. Just to get something in the crop, a bit of nutrition (fat and sugar, essentially, but it is better than nothing).

I know should likely cull, but I am hoping it perks up. It always has to be the pretty ones, doesn't it?

If you can get a hold of some roe (fish eggs) dip one tiny one in honey and stick it in the back of its beak so it has to swallow it. Do that every two hours or so. You need to actually be putting food in its beak for it to eat it. I have never got down the filling their crop maneuver so I just put food in their mouths and make them swallow it. I used to be able to do it with cockatiel babies but chicks out maneuver me every time.


This weeks hatch for me was pretty good. 1 Gary Ramey egg hatched, so I am happy to get at least one from shipped eggs, especially considering I broke 5 eggs. I put 12 of my blue eggers in and 10 hatched although the other babies started pecking at it before it was even completely hatched and managed to get its yolk sac back out and broke open before I could get in and rescue it. It died, so I ended up with 10 hatched chicks and I think all that I am not keeping are sold. Yeah!
