Araucana thread anyone?

Oh man. Oh man. I really do believe that Araucanas are one of the FEW breeds I accept the cuckoo color on.

Aaah I wish I had an LF Araucana with that color.

I would admit, like Jean said, even my Araucanas are all more like Easter Eggers, as I have NONE with recognized, proper coloring. Gary Ramey, who I got them from, sent me more splash, leaked blue, leaked blue cuckoo, and defected duckwings than any other color. Also, I have no whites in here. I'd LOVE to get some blacks from Steve Waters to fix my own flock though.

Another reason I have not joined the club yet. . . I truly need to get some true, showable Araucanas going here. In fact, I only have one who could make it in a show, and only as an AOV bird. (splash)

Illia,

I joined the araucana club before I had my first araucana. I don't show nor do I have anything worth showing but I am still a member. Its only $ 20.00 per year I think.

I have a tufted cuckoo chick I will get pics of tomorrow. I don't like the color and this little bird reminds me of a mime for some reason. LOL!

Your birds would be considered AOV which is all other variety or even non-standard araucana not easter egger. Easter Eggers has to do with the many colors of eggs you can get because you don't know what breed was used to get the EE. I personally prefer AOV because if you have a great looking bird but it doesn't fit the color standard you can still show it under AOV, I believe. Can't show and EE in an araucana class.

I like cages around for single roos or bantam pairs, for sinlge matings. Pluss It's easier to focus the camera on the birds in a smaller pen, rather than chasing them down from a tree, yards or fields.

Taking long distand photos.

I usually keep my birds in 8x4 , 8x8 pens or 20 x 10 pens.
no more than 3-5 to a pen over here, I like all my chickens to be as confortable as possible. Happy chickens are healthy chickens & healthy chickens lay plenty of eggs ...

I know what you mean tough, I have seen people cram chickens in small guinea pig cages.

not a cross he came from a lady who had whites & blues & blacks, they just happend to throw out a cuckoo chick ???

That's the story anyways, I go them from a friend who bred them into his flock of Black, Whites,Blue & Splashes.
Out of this 1 cuckoo chick he breed an entire flock & sold them off as laying chickens.
I was lucky enough to get some.

If it came from true Araucana stock its because of the Dominiques in the ancient past and the barring gene or pattern gene is hid in the Whites, and you can't see it in the Whites, some of them do have it. The barring is different on your bird than the ones Ann Charles had, hers had crisper barring like how a barred rock is as opposed to the Cuckoo barring, and the difference is in the rate of the feather growth for one thing. That was why I asked what Cuckoo breed.

The faster feathering birds are what you want to choose also its supposed to improve the resistance to Mareks was what I got told by Jocelyn in Canada.

Oh I know, but really, even for AOV I'd like to fix them up. Some of them have too green of egg color, and the blues/blacks/splashes all have some leakage to some extent, sometimes too much.

I understand what your saying. Mostly I ment to say Join the araucana club. For your money you get a list of all the araucana breeders and their contact info. To me that was worth the $ 20.00

The araucana club website has been very helpful to me for info. Not as much fun as here but still lots of info if you search. They also have a thread on who has birds for sale.

Here is my splash roo. He is bi-lateral tufted most time but his girls are a wee bit jealous because they don't have tufts. He has 4 tail feathers. I could pluck them but he is what he is. Out of 26 chicks from him only 1 has any sort of tail.

Here is a couple of pics of a barred chick out of my splash roo. He looks like a mime or maybe a gondalier. LOL!
