Araucana thread anyone?

Megan, that is so awesome. That was a good save by your little one. Obviously you are teaching her correctly and already she knows more than most do about the differences in the two breeds.

I was bummed today because my hatch was just about complete for the weekend and I hadn't gotten any tufted chicks this go around. I was packaging up a box of Ameraucana chicks that I had sold, getting them ready to ship, and my daughter who is three years old reached into the box and pulled out a little splash chick and said "This one isn't an Easter Egger mom, it has tufts. I said "No honey, it's just got really big muff and beard, look, I'll show you." I grabbed it up (you all see where this is going, I know) and darned if that little thing doesn't have two great big fluffy tufts and no tail!! It must have hatched and then jumped the separators somehow - I keep the breeds separated when they are hatching. I had even toe punched the little thing as an Ameraucana!!! How embarrassing! Thanks to my little sidekick for saving me from a super oops!!
The same thing happened with my hatch Friday - I had Speckled Sussex with the Araucana, and the Sussex hopped the fence. I knew there was one chipmunk Araucana (just like the sussex) and it took my 6 year old to figure out who was who! I guess they actually listen to us when we talk chickens nonstop...

Look what happened to my araucana chick....someone pulled on his tuft and has almost pulled it out! would it hurt him if I clipped the feather off way down low next to the skin so the other chickens will leave it alone.

Is there anyone in Central Florida who has Araucana chickens? I recently purchased some chicks that turned out to be Americanas. They are cute, but I want to get some real Araucanas.

I used to raise them in Ohio, or that was what I was told they were. I've learned a bunch in the past few months.

There s a Facebook group on this breed. You might want to locate that too.

;)

Actually those are Easter Eggers. Ameraucanas are just as rare to find as Araucanas. The chick in your avatar is an Easter Egger.

As for FL, not sure. I think Cashdl used to live there, perhaps ask her if she knew anyone else in that state. There's a breeder in SC who ships chicks though.

Pride and Joy on here has them...although you will have to check and see if he has anything available. He is in the southern part of FL

Check the Showbird auction site. Also Mr Ramey has chicks to give away. Check the Facebook Araucana page.
