Araucana thread anyone?

I am so sorry we did not rush to answer your question. If you had looked through this thread you will have noticed alot of questions get overlooked because we all lead busy lives and sometimes the ones who know the answers don't check back in until several pages have gone by. It you want to leave over that then good riddance, we don't need hotheads or people who get their feelings hurt over the wind blowing, since this thread is a populated by kind caring people who like discussing the araucana and helping each other out. You could have just as easily reposted your photos and asked again your question and none of us would have minded. If you are not a hothead nor do you get your feelings hurt over the wind blowing, then welcome. We would value your addition to our group.

In answer to your two questions, the pullet is laced but she appears to be too light to be blue, she could be a splash laced, however someone who works with blue can give you a better answer.

Regarding the tuft issue, yes you can trim it back, but some blue cote on the peduncle ( flap of skin where the tuft grows) that will keep it from getting pecked more and let it heal. As the bird gets older hopefully she will learn to keep her tuft away from those who are jealous of her beauty.

I apologize...I am not a hothead.....they already ripped his tuft all the way out! I was really upset about this, I should have just trimmed it. I felt everyone just ignored my post. So I kindof vented inappropriately. Sorry to anyone I offended.

I am happy you stuck around. I am not offended.

You need to have a serious talk with your bird about keeping her tufts away from others. I have a few that have amazing tufts and then I have others that should have amazing tufts but can't seem to keep them out of the other birds mouths. Its almost like it comes down to bird pride if there is such a thing. My birds with the nicest tufts are also the cleanest birds, they are always grooming themselfs and tend to have a more upright carriage, like they are something special. And I guess they are.

Welcome to the group. I look forward to more of your pictures.

I am having a hawk problem, and I am TRYING to keep a small sense of humor about it or else I would really blow my top. I am looking for any suggestions to keep the hawks away. Covering my outside pen is simply NOT an option - it's too big of a space. I have put metallic pinwheels throughout the space, and my kind old neighbor, thinking he solved the worlds chicken/hawk problem, put up a fake owl for me. I don't think the owl will do much, but the since the pinwheels I haven't had any more losses. The problem is that there is now a field of pinwheels and I don't think that helps the chicken-annoyed neighbors feel much better about my chickens.

My husband is trying to help. So far his suggestions have been:
1. Teach the chickens karate.
2. Put spiked collars on the chickens (the hawks go for the neck).

As you can see, I really good use some more tried and true ways to keep the hungry hawks at bay. Does anyone have any other suggestions that have worked for them?

I have been having a hawk problem here lately too and don't really have an answer for you other than cover at least part of your run and put places for the birds to hide under. Get a Rooster if you don't already have one, they will keep an eye out and sound the alarm when they see one coming.

I have a poor cattle dog that the hawks keep busy. Between keeping the deer off my lawns and keeping the hawks off my chickens the poor dog is run ragged.

My Araucana chicks are about 6 wks old. They are fiesty with any other chicks they are combined with. Will this continue due to their nature or will they settle down after establishing dominance? They have been in with 2 Brahma pullets, slightly older, for over a week and give them a hard time every chance they get. I'd like to know what I'm in for.
Thanks.
