Araucana thread anyone?

So awhile back I posted a pic of this one, and the unanimous thought was rooster. However, he is now 16 weeks old, with NO crowing even though others his age are. He also is very mild mannered, no posturing of any sort, although he does have a bad leg from a dog attack. I *think* I see spurs coming in, though. But then I saw a pic of somebody's hen that had a comb just like this, even though my Araucana hens combs are WAY smaller. Do you all still think roo?

"Broccoli"

Also, do you think I could post her eggs on ebay as "Naked Neck Araucana" and get away with it because the pic cuts off her bum???!!! Just kidding! I just think those "Araucana" pics that cut off the rump are TOO funny! Seems someone could post just about anything and call it whatever they want.
Definately a roo. And your girl is adorable. Now breed her with a rumpless tufted araucana and sell the eggs from her rumpless pullets as Naked Neck Araucanas. LOL! That would be a truly goofy looking bird.

Just wanted to show off a little...  these are my hatch from corborder!  I got 7 in all, 1 great tufted, 2 single tufted, and the rest cleanfaced and all beautiful.

This USED to be a nice bi-laterally tufted one until somebody got tuft envy!  This is Edith.

I love this one - VERY friendly and curious.  My 3 year old named it Blackbeard.

Same chick...

This is Chickpea, also very sweet and quite petite.

Another single tuft.  This one is beefy!

And just for fun check out my guinea's eyelashes!!!  This was taken right before she decided to take me out.  They are NOT fond of human contact!

Very cute. I'm so glad you got some tufted ones!

Definite cockerel on that one in question.

If you ever have a bird you're wondering the gender of who's over 7 weeks old, here's a big question that will answer yours - Are any of the feathers on the back, neck, or wings glossy? If yes, it's a boy. If no, it's a girl.

Well, great news, got quite a few broody large non-Araucana gals here, so, I'm going to be collecting up tons of Araucana eggs probably in a week from now to hatch out a few batches for myself. My goal will be to have at least 12 more chicks this year, ( I know, small number ) not counting the latest.

In the mean time, here's the chicks of Josephine's so far. One of the yellow chicks appears to be a silver columbian-duckwing, possibly wheaten split, the others are hard to say, but the blue cuckoo of course is growing up to look like that weird splash cuckoo color. I really really don't understand the "cuckoo" color of Araucanas, in fact I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with barring at all, even though it acts like it. My splash cuckoo hen bred to any non-barred, non-splash or blue bird tends to throw barred birds in BOTH genders (

) but sometimes no barring, and the males if "barred" grow up to be a weird mix of white, black, blue, and brown. If I breed any "blue cuckoo" to a non-barred, non-splash birds, I get the same, but some blacks in there as well. Not a clue what this "cuckoo" gene really is, but it's weird, especially in males.

Anyway, the chicks. . .

Few more weeks and I'll be able to get a good idea on color of the striped and yellow kids. A week or two after that and I'll be able to sex 'em.

So for weeks and weeks I've been wondering about that roo that I asked about last night, finally asked last night, then THIS morning went out to him crowing and trying to hop on a hens back. Go figure!!!!!

Chick 4 - Could this one be mottled? I was thinking he was birchen, I don't have anything mottled.......unless.....well, India and Obie are both solid black but both have a few white tipped feathers. Or is this just juvenile feathering and it will come in more black?? I have another one like this, I'll take some pics later today

I would guess number 1 and 2 are pullets. They have that feminine look. 3 looks to be a cockerel. Pretty babies.
I can't wait to see how number 4 turns out!
