Araucana thread anyone?

Rudy's beautiful! I don't know what the brown triangle on the wing is but it seems like a Wheaten doesn't have that? And a BBR does?

Our roosters look pretty similar other than that. Does your rooster have patterning on his chest or solid black? I've never felt sure about Rudy's color and have had some duckwings from him with a duckwing hen. Some of these colors are so mixed up, I think BBR, wheaten and duckwing can all be there together. I'm going to try him with these 2 hens and see what comes from it and maybe I'll learn more about him

No, Both Wheatens and BBR's have the wing triangle. Crow wing does not have the triangle.

He's got the lacing which I hadn't even noticed til you asked. I thought that was another Brown Red indicator? But he's a Black Breasted Red as far as I know. The Araucana colors are a bit confusing to me.
I knew less than nothing about the Araucana breed when I fell in love with him awhile back. I just thought him and his hen were beautiful and so gentle looking. I got a tailed double tufted BR/wild type girl with these 2 (plus 3 pullets that came from them) the same day. Then a week later I had 7 Araucana babies hatch out from eggs I'd had shipped-I jumped in with both feet! I've got eggs saved from this trio and am deciding if I should hatch them.

Just saw this, Debi-thanks! Is there any chance of Splash with the eggs I got from you? 2 of these babies are certainly looking Splash.
ETA: I just looked up pictures of both and what I've been calling "Brown Red" in roosters is Crow wing. So confusing I've got some Bantam Ameraucana I hatched that are supposed to be that color, they're still just a few wks old.

Not correct. Both BBR wild type and BBR Wheaten have the brown triangle. They are both BBR Only Crow winged birds do not have the brown triangle. The crow wing bird is of the brown red ( BBR colored with no brown wing triangle) and Birchen( Silver Duckwing with no wing Triangle) plus there are various other colorations.

The wing triangle has nothing to do with what color a bird is. It has to do with wether it has the gene for the color in the primaries or not.

The Marans is a crow winged bird. The Araucana was originally a duckwing breed, but other colors have been brought in and we are now seeing more and more crow winged birds. Many of them are not true crow wings but duckwings with lots of melanizers.

To add to the confusion - The BBR ( Wheaten- ewh), BBR ( Wild Type- e+), BBR ( partridge or Brown- eb) in roosters are almost identical phenotypically or visually. The difference is seen in the chicks and hens.

The hen pictured is a brown red crow wing. Think of a marans hens color and hers is very similar more gold than red, crow wing non the less. The marans is a crow wing breed.

Whatever that Black hen with the gold neck lacing is? I want more of her color. How do I get them?
