Araucana thread anyone?

does anyone know where to get day old chicks? i'm aware of the rameys, but was looking for other possible sources.

Syble I love the lacing on the blue. Are you thinking of showing any at the show in Oct in Birch Run?
I'm afraid I don't have any rumpless birds with tufts lol, I hope to rectify that next year lol. My work/school schedule has been insane also. And now to top things off my mom has been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Been a crazy year for sure.

If i have some time I will at least try and go up and see the show, I would like to at least get out to more shows i think.

Sorry to hear about your mother, Syble. I pray that God give you and her the strength to get thru this. Have they said she is terminal? Remember to ask her all kinds of questions about herself and her childhood. There is so much that I wish that I had ask of both my mom and dad before they died.

yea, short conversation. hmm. below is from wiki:

So, it sounds to me as if the collonca (if it's a breed, per lanae), is just an araucana w/o the tufts. they got the tufts from the quetro.

.
Although that is one distinction between Collonca and Araucana, I guess - the Collonca have little sexual characteristic differences, but my Araucana males definately have bigger combs.

This is a study that began with studying the tufting and rumpless genes and has gone far beyond that
Wow - thanks for the link. It'll take a while to read & understand this paper.

FYI I have listed a bunch of roosters and cockerels on my website. A couple double tufted too ;). Trying to reduce my numbers and keep the colors I am concentrating on. Link in my signature.

Here is a pic of our one lone girl who went to the fair. I would have shown our boy but his tail is so beautiful I knew none of the other birds would have a chance

. Our girl has one small feather on her left "tuft" and her right tuft still seems to be developing. I tried to make the judgeing but the judge showed up two hours early and completed it so I didn't get to observe. The superintendant said that the judge spent alot of time with her and really seemed to like her ( I guess he made some comments) but one of our Salmon Fav. girls beat her out for Grand. She did come away with a 1st premium however.

Question: What age do the girls start to lay? Will her comb grow/turn red? My boy has quite the red comb and wattles but my girls are barely there and still kind of gray. They are currently 17weeks.
