Araucana thread anyone?

i don't think it matters. the only reason to breed a tufted to a clean face is to reduce the number of deaths of the double tufted gene. people do both - tufted roo x clean face hens and tufted hens x clean face roos.

can you tell if a day old is going to be tailed? if so, can someone post a pic of both a tailed and non-tailed day old?

thanks.

You can tell if they will be tailed if you can feel the tailbone. Run your finger on their bum, just above their cloaca. If you feel the distinctive bump of the tailbone, chick will be tailed. If there is no bump at all, the chick is missing its coccyx, and thus is rumpless. It may grow a few stray tailfeathers, it happens, but the bird will in essence be without a tail. It isn't something that a picture can really show, the fuzz of a day old hides it.

My hatch of Debi's eggs turned out excellent! I now have 7 little healthy chicks! I got one that is double tuffed and the thought brought up a question to my mind. Is it better to have a tuffed rooster with an untuffed hen or a tuffed hen with an untuffed rooster. (what combination may give me more tuffed chicks in the future?)
Thank you!!

If you have a tufted male, he can be used with many untufted hens to give you half tufted chicks. If your male does not have tufts, then all your hens must to be tufted to give you the same percentage of tufted chicks. That is why having a tufted male can make your life easier if you don't have the luxury of a pen full of tufted ladies.

Keep watching for tufts, sometimes they are so tiny you don't really see them at first. If the chick has tiny tufts, 1 tuft or double tufted they will have the gene for tufting and can produce tufted chicks. If you get a really nice tufted one even if it has a tail, you can still use it with a rump-less hen to get some rump-less tufted chicks.

Came home from the holiday to find two beautiful (but tiny) blue eggs.

She is 20 months and had been nesting before we left. I thought there was only one but the second was coverd up in the nest.

You know, I wonder how many people get into Araucanas hoping to make a buck off of selling the eggs? I honestly don't really see a new faces really when it comes to selling, the people who do it well are the ones who sell the eggs. I was hoping to sell some hatching eggs to break even. I figured out early that wouldn't work this year. So next year I will be first building breeding pens, and also addressing fertility. I've had abysmal fertility in the eggs I collect for my own incubator. Enough for me to grow my flock and get a few birds I am very happy with, but I could never sell, since shipping is so hard on eggs.

So next year I will be going to ship out test eggs, if all goes well. I want to be sure that eggs are hatching for others before I ever think of asking for money for them. I was going to do test eggs this year, but since I have low fertility at home, I am sure it wouldn't have been worth sometimes time to try.
Stacy,
I'll always take eggs. So if you want to try shipping them to me, let me know. I've had someone tell me that they wondered if the x-raying at the post office might have an effect on fertility. So I wondered if you wrap the eggs in the carton with aluminum foil to stop the x-rays, would that protect the eggs and solve the hatching rate problem. Let me know if you want to try and I'll send you some money.

Can anyone tell me what color these are going to be?

Bird #1 (center bird)

.

Here are two the exact same color...both hens, one clean faced and one with two dainty little tufts.
