Araucana thread anyone?

Wheaten based BBRs are extrememly rare. Only myself and one other breeder are actively breeding them and for them. I do not sell day old chicks and she does at times but they are a mix of her pens so you may get 1 or 2 bbr or none at all. Not only are the wheatens rare, they are not a standard wheaten color, they are a dark wheaten which is a very important distinction.

Here is my website www.cashsblueeggs.com and here is the other breeders www.skyblueegg.com

thank you for the response. i know of a few breeders who breed wheaton based. i have wheaton based. but, am looking for diversity.

hope you're having a great weekend.

That would be great. How long have you been working with the APA BBR color? Do you show your birds? Are you a member of the ACA? I didn't see any other breeders on the ACA membership list that have BBR that I didn't contact. I found most had wild type. I am fairly well acquainted with most of the well know show breeders - Steve Waters, Terry Reader, Ann Charles, Ann Horsman, Fritz Ludwig, Karen Liguori and would love to add another breeder to my list of contacts. I find that we can learn something from each other. Steve Waters will be at Stockton this year as will Karen and Terry I am sure.

We have a discussion going on right now at the ACA website about APA BBR that you might be interested in.

Since you work with this rare color, I am sure you are aware of how difficult it is to get correct. Mostly the hens are the problem. I have a couple that are close to correctly colored and one that is, but its legs are more yellow than willow. I have 4 active breeding pens and two standbye roosters. Each year things are looking better and better. I will have a few birds at the Araucana Nationals at Stockton this year but none of my girls. The roosters are easier to get correct. My best colored birds are cleanfaced and my tufted hens are either too dark or too brown, or too something. Onward and Upward, I say.

i would be interested in the discussion. i currently have two roosters and two hens. i have eggs in the incubator due to hatch this week, and more waiting to go in as soon as these hatch. i began last year. i do not show. a group of chickens from several different farms in one place makes me nervous. that said, i am breeding to standard as i understand it. i am not a member of the aca. nor or the few breeders i know. they also don't use the internet to "advertise" what they're doing. they are not hiding, you'd just have to meet them "in real life" to know what they're up to. in fact, i, myself, just joined this website a few weeks ago.

i also have blue/black/splash araucanas.

i like the breed. in my homestead, they are a breed who will stay. they are the most awesome chicks i have - personality, range ability, build (those breasts!), egg laying (and color), etc.

i have decided i question any homesteader who dismisses the araucana breed.

eta: and the tufts, of course! triple love.

I'm so glad to see you here too. There are a fair number of breeders here and a facebook group as well. I'd love to see some photo's of your Araucana's and it would be really nice to see more of your other Araucana friends here. I'm in SW MIssouri, I have blacks, blue's and working to sort out some other colors including duckwing and some surprise buffs I've hatched this year

Lanae and imtrying i have been following your discussion and was wondering if u guys could post some pics of your wheaton BBR hens and roos. I am just a pre schooler in genetics but am learning.

Here are a few quick photos of mine.

Here is a Wheaten based BBR roo of mine. I have 3 more that are tufted and 1 more cleanfaced.

This is a pullet from this year. I love this girl. She is a shade too dark but realy shows the transitions in color that the wheatens should have.

Here is another pullet. She is a little light for me and her legs are not very willow. More yellow than green, but she is very close to the perfect Araucana wheaten BBR color.

This is one of my main girls. She is too dark but her pullets are definately lighter.

This is a chick I just hatched last weekend that is looking very promising.
