Araucana thread anyone?

Its partly my fault cause I was hesitant to determin gender. One day it just clicked. Her brother all the sudden looked like a boy and she didn't. Oh well. I have both a blue and a splash pen with a blue hen in it. I will definately have more blues.

Hi All,

No one has posted lately and I miss you all. I am on the hunt for large fowl duckwings, prefer tufted and rumpless, but may be interested in clean faced rumpless if the type is nice.

I had 3 splash chicks hatch this week with 6 more eggs still in the incubator. At least 1 is tufted and all appear rumpless. The tufted splash is out of my splash and blue pen. The roo in their has only 1 tuft and the chicks that come out of there it seems are mostly uni-laterily tufted. I have had a couple of double tufted blues out of there but all the splashs only have 1 tuft. Actually all the tufted blues have been double tufted. None of the hens in that pen are tufted as of now. I did have 1 tufted hen in there and everything out of her ,no matter who the roo is, has been double tufted.

I have a little black roo who I am hoping will take the place of the BBR roo that died a couple of months ago. He has two huge tufts, small comb, totally rumpless and is starting to get red on his shoulders.

Ann Cushion has a picture of a Black/Red roo on her website and I have wanted one every since I saw the pic, so I am really excited for the little roo to finish growing. I will take pics today and post them. He is at the goofy looking stage.

So more chicks are hatching. Right now I have a BBR or Duckwing based chick hatching out of my blue pen. In that pen I have a blue roo over two blue hens. 1 of the blue hens was in a bbr pen untill the bbr roo died 9 weeks ago. I moved her to the blue pen expecting to get bbr based chicks for about 2 weeks plus incubation time of 3 weeks but here I am at 6 weeks plus incubation time and am still getting chipmonk chicks out of her. Don't get me wrong I am beyond thrilled especially since the latest chick has the biggest tufts I have seen so far. And we all know that duckwing and bbr are my favorite colors so tufted or not I am thrilled.

I am wondering if anyone else has had the same experience with fertility lasting well beyond what is expected. That hen is the only one producing the chipmonk chicks and both hens are of the same breeding. Or does blue hide other colors?

I sure hope most Araucana roosters don't naturally have LONG lasting fertility like that. . . I don't want that culled duckwing of mine to haunt my girl's eggs forever.

Congrats on all that though. I don't think I'll be hatching purebred Araucanas until spring.

In the mean time, Marango my "Lemon Blue" says hi.

That first photo is hysterical. Scrolling down my screen and then boom, there's that face looking for all the word like a reprimanding professor. If he just had some miniature spectacles perched precariously on his beak....
Wow, Illia, I just noticed that you are nearly to 5,000 posts! That's really something.

Cashdl, you're amazing! That's a lot of chicks to be caring for. When you have time, I'd love to see pics of the tufted bbr or duckwing/blue chick.
