Araucana thread anyone?

Hey yall! I finally get to join in the fun! There was an intimate poultry pals meet and greet yesterday at a nearby cafe. Around 20 people who raise chickens and other poultry got together to have brunch and swap/sell eggs chicks and others. A lady who lives near me invited me so I thought, eh why not? Well I got into touch with a gentleman who had Araucanas. He said he got his from Lisa Helms when she sold her flock. He sold me these cuties for $60. There's 6 in this picture. There's also a few other breeds I got as well. He showed me pics of his breeders and they are beautiful! His are golden duckwing / silver duckwing. Out of the 6 I have 1 double tufted and 1 single. The rest are clean faced. Can you tell by the way they're feathering out if they're silver/gold duckwing? And is it possible to tell at these ages if they're feathering in and pullets or cockerels? I'm just gushing so hard right now. I vowed to never try and incubate shipped araucana eggs after spending $100 for eggs that never made it to hatch. I actually had just crossed the idea of having them out of my mind as I decided I'd only spend money on chicks. And they were a great price! We'll see how they turn out tho. They are all tailless too.

Cockerels will have black feathers on their breasts, pullets will have salmon breasts... Lisa had amazing flocks, I got Apollo from her...

Nice hatch! Cute chicks!!
Here are the eggs I put in Incubator Friday. I know most will not hatch but looking forward to what I do get. Shipped eggs do not hatch well and also Araucana's have a hard time so any I get is a bonus. Looking forward to to hatch day.
:fl :fl

Pretty Araucanas! Good luck with the hatch!
I was shocked when I bought a dozen shipped eggs and 6 hatched!
I'm hoping for a few tufted ones...don't know when you can tell! And what colors do I have?

You can see tufts right at hatch... you have a couple at least... as for colors, where did they come from? Some keep colors separate and some don't...

I bought from an eBay seller. She has all the colors...black, white, splash, lavenders, gold duckwing, a silvery blue double tufted rooster and one dark female with gold neck feathers.
I think I have one of each.
Which ones have tufts so I know what to yo look for?

Mixed colors then... could be just about anything, from those colors blended together or look similar with leakage, etc...

Chick in the 5th pic and last pic look like they have tufts... need clearer, closer pics to tell for sure... it's just a small clump of down longer than the rest anywhere around the ear vicinity...

Ok, got it, thank you.... I think I like the more traditional color patterns, I'm not really into lavendars and barrs and all that fun stuff.... Now if I can just get some birds for my 3 pens!

I just lost a whole clutch of eggs, but I bought some more. I'll try one more round of incubation.....If it doesn't work out, I'll be in line to buy some birds. Y'all keep me in mind if you have any to let go...

If in doubt whether a line is based on wheaten vs wild type, look at the chicks. Wild type base is the brown with chipmunk stripes. Wheaten based is yellow with shaded color on back. Yellow with stripes means they have been mixed together. It would generally be better to work with one base Color or the other rather than mixing them up so it's important to know when you buy what the chicken color was on the ones you bought. Roosters of both types look almost identical and can be shown either way but the hymns will be different enough that the only ones to show will be the wild type which is the correct base color for the Araucana in show. I have to agree that the Wheaton base makes a prettier rooster but for me I stick to the wild type and work on that This does mean it is a little harder for me to buy from other breeders because I need to know for sure what base color they have

Asking all the Araucana people, is this breed prone to compacted poo as chicks? I have a 2 day old who had a hard white poo the size of a large pea blocking up its vent.
I noticed the chick straining to go and the vent was very swollen. It had pushed so hard that the vent was actually tearing a bit. I put it in a warm bath up to its waist and then used a qtip with coconut oil to dab the vent hoping the poo would soften and come out. It was so solid that I eventually had to carefully break it apart with tweezers and pull it out. Poor little thing. It's very swollen still. I cleaned it really well and applied another dab of coconut oil. I have never had this happen before and when I tried looking it up, everyone I found with the same issue was an Araucana chick. Is it coincidence, or a known issue?

Your chicks issue may be a combination of stress and dehydration. Overheating can also cause pasty but, so be sure that the brooder has both a warm and a cool zone..
