Araucana thread anyone?

nice colours, both of them.

Thank you... :)

@RavynFallen
those are nice! It's amazing how different the cockerel looks vs his granddaddy....both are very nice :drool

I'm not sure what to think, either... I look at his pics and it seems like the pens are divided by color variety, but then he's got some really mixed looking birds (my 3 are a hot mess). I'm not sure what to make of it. His FB page says he's been working on the Palomino color for a while, the pic was dated January 2015.

Yes, the breast looks to be a very light grey or blue.... If you get a chance to see the pic, I'd like to know your thoughts on his comb and the shank color....and would you say he's Silver or gold based?

If you can get the pic and PM it to me, I'd take a look... I can't look at FB on my phone, it blocks me unfortunately...

Having pens divided by color varieties is different than penning 'like colors' together... if they aren't breeding true, then they're just similar colored... or in a project status... but without proper culling towards a goal, it's still just breeding mixed color...

Just some thoughts anyways...

Like this... this is the grandson of my original cock bird... not the direction I am working towards, so he will be culled this weekend...

Here we go, I can't belief it let me download it! - I'm surprised I like him so well, I usually like deep rich colors....:pop

Interesting... he looks like mine but with white replacing all the gold/cream and the blue washed out to almost none...

Do they all look like this or just him?

Right, yes he does look similar... I only saw pics of him, but the FB page said something about having breeding stock available in this color variety

He did have trios available for around $225, if I remember right.... I sent an email asking about them.

Jenn has a few birds for sale

.... she actually has 2 red pyle pullets (Cash) and a blue wheaten hen (I need some girls badly, or rather, the cockerels do!)...she also has a handful of nice roos, but I have to be careful and choose wisely. I already have enough of them!

I keep jotting down potential groups, by colors, but I feel like I need to do some more reading, for a clear understanding, before I just buy up everything for sale....

If I chose not to do red pyles, could I use those red pyle pullets with another color variety?

This what I'm considering for breeding pens:

1. BBR pen: Nashoba 2x tufted black roo (carries mottling) and 2 A.Charles BBR pullets
I could use Sheppard's Duckwing based roo (rumpless and tufted, yellow legs)
- In this pen, would it be better to use the black or the duckwing roo?

2. BBS pen: Lombardi roo Blue w/Red 2x tufted, Lombardi Blue w/Red and Blue/Gold pullets, Nashoba Blue
Wheaten pullet (or should this pullet go in the BBR pen?)
Jenn also has a beautiful Blue/Red roo, but he's clean faced.

3. Red Pyle pen: Sheppard's white/faded Duckwing roo (2x tufted, good comb, but partial tail & yellow legs)
Cash Red Pyle pullets (2), Cash Red Pyle chick (unsexed).
- I don't know what this Sheppard roo will throw, it should be interesting!

4. Palomino pen: trio, if I can get some....

5. Random mixed colors and back up birds.

Ouch, that's a bit of a chunk, lol...

If Jenn has better quality cockerel that would match up what you want better, don't be afraid to cull from what you already picked up... Jenn's got solid quality lines, seen some of her winners... ;)

Also, if the type and form is good, don't let clean faced scare you away... tufts can always be added later, that's not a critical deal breaker, just a cosmetic touch...

Worry about they type, form and shape first... then the coloring...

Hey yall!

I finally get to join in the fun!

There was an intimate poultry pals meet and greet yesterday at a nearby cafe. Around 20 people who raise chickens and other poultry got together to have brunch and swap/sell eggs chicks and others. A lady who lives near me invited me so I thought, eh why not? Well I got into touch with a gentleman who had Araucanas. He said he got his from Lisa Helms when she sold her flock. He sold me these cuties for $60. There's 6 in this picture. There's also a few other breeds I got as well. He showed me pics of his breeders and they are beautiful! His are golden duckwing / silver duckwing. Out of the 6 I have 1 double tufted and 1 single. The rest are clean faced. Can you tell by the way they're feathering out if they're silver/gold duckwing? And is it possible to tell at these ages if they're feathering in and pullets or cockerels?

I'm just gushing so hard right now. I vowed to never try and incubate shipped araucana eggs after spending $100 for eggs that never made it to hatch. I actually had just crossed the idea of having them out of my mind as I decided I'd only spend money on chicks. And they were a great price! We'll see how they turn out tho. They are all tailless too.
