Araucana thread anyone?

If a tufted cock is bred to a tufted hen will all the chicks die in shell or will some hatch? I’ve heard that some will hatch but may be more delicate for the first week or two.

Since the tufting gene is dominant I would assume that breeding a double tufted cock to a clean faced hen should produce all tufted chicks. My question is will these chicks be single tufted or double tufted?
Does getting one gene for tufting express itself as a single tuft and 2 copies of the gene express as double tufts?

Sorry for all the questions.

good questions.

I bred both double tufted birds. 1 died in the shell on day 17, 5 hatched, 1 stopped growing around week 2 (died week 3), 1 was weak and died around week 4, 3 grew up. another one developed tumor in the eye (I butchered her). out of 6 only 2 left.

We’re the chicks that hatched double tufted?

Fun fact: The reason chicks die in shell when they receive two copies of the tuft genes is because it causes a hole in their throat. So when they start to pip they drown. :(

Since we're speaking of tufts, I saw a TRIPLE tufted cockbird at Nancy Utterback's house. And they were HUGE tufts! The third one was located under his jaw, which makes me think he was a survivor of inheriting two copies of the tuft gene. I asked if she has bred him and she said "no, I just keep him around because my grandson thinks he's neat." I told her if she ever wants to sell him to let me know! Funny how long term breeders are so nonchalant about birds us newbies would sell a body part to own!

@Brahma Chicken5000 I came across some old notes and I told you wrong in post 9607. When breeding tufted to tufted, 50% would be tufted, not clean faced. 25% would be non-tufted, and 25% dead in shell. Sorry about that!

No worries Trish thanks for updating me.
How are your Araucanas doing?
Really well! Everyone is still getting along great. At 6 1/2 months old I have not had to split up the pullets and cockerels. They seem to have paired themselves up naturally. Mano, who is tufted, only mates Mama who is clean faced. Buck, who is clean faced, only tries to mate with Bonita, who is single tufted (she is not laying yet and won't allow it), and DT who is tufted tries to mate with Lil Girl, who is clean faced (again she isn't ready to allow it). Its almost as nature is telling them to pair tufted with non-tufted!

How are your girls doing? Are they outside full time yet?

That’s pretty cool how they paired themselves up.

My girls aren’t outside full time yet. We’re supposed to get snow tomorrow. I crack the window in my room so they get fresh air.

Sounds like you have a couple of house pets! ;)
Oh, I have a lady coming for DT on Friday. He's the cockerel I listed for sale here. She wants to use him for an olive egger project. If she doesn't show, I'm going to take him off the market and keep him.
