Araucana thread anyone?

I have the opportunity to get a few dozen hatching eggs, but honestly was shying away from it due to worry about the lethal gene. I have read 23 pages in and feel a bit better about it, but would love to get opinions. Is it worth is, to get the breed, even though you could have high losses hatching out? What has everyone's experience been, as far as how many chicks set vs how many made it?

I had double tufted hen and roo. I put 7 eggs (laid in a row) and 6 hatched. 1 was a runt and died within 3 weeks.

if you breed tufted and non tufted birds you will have no problem.

Most of the top breeders breed tufted to tufted and take the loss. Remember the stats you read are taken from many, MANY hatches over time, and not necessarily based off of one hatch. The president of the Araucana club just had a 90% hatch rate breeding tufted to tufted birds. That was probably all his luck right there. It depends if you want more tufted chicks (breed tufted x tufted) or if you want more live chicks (breed clean faced x tufted). Honestly, I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I would definitely prefer to have more live and the breeder has a mix as far s tufted and non, so I am hoping that would give me a decent hatch rate. I am a week and a half out from having an empty incubator, so will try to update then! He's about an hour and a half away so I will just make the drive rather then risk shipping.
Thanks for your advice!

good luck!

@Trish1974 how is Bonita doing?
@Frazzemrat1 how are the eggs looking? When are they set to hatch?

:hit:hit
Well, as you know this was my first hatch.... And I think sometimes I'm a little dyslexic.... I accidentally set the incubator at 95, not 99.5. So they never started. :hit:hit I'll never forget again, I can tell you... But there will be no hatchlings from Napoleon's line from my chickens.

Bonita laid an egg Monday! :ya She seems to be back to normal!
I have a lady coming for DT today. I'm kind of sad about it, but happy about why she is purchasing him. She is buying him for her grandson, who is in his 10th and final year of 4H. He has always shown chickens, and she wanted something special for him to show for his final year. I was also a 10 year member of 4H, and still a big supporter of the organization, so this makes me happy.

@Frazzemrat1 your hen's eggs should still be fertile; you could try to set more. Its worth a shot!
