Araucana thread anyone?

out the tails...
Have you tried the Araucana Breeders Club of America's breeder list?

Which variety are you looking for?[/quote]

Well definitely LF. As for colors I'm greedy and love them all. But we mostly have BBS and some imperfect silver duckwings. The big issue right now is the tufts. Out of 25 birds we only have a handful of tufted and none of those are roos unless the 8 in the incubator give us a nicely tufted guy.
We have looked at the breeders list but I was hoping I guess for websites with lots of pics to lurk through before choosing the right one. There are only 2 big sites I have found and both of those are so far from us. I can't bear the thought of those birds making a cross country journey through post. Ive experienced what the post does to eggs.
Also just as important to us as the breed being true is that they come from a good home. I know that sounds kind of silly but even the rejects from the breeding group are special here. We spend hours handfeeding and talking and petting and fretting over them. I don't want to buy from just anyone you know? Just like getting a puppy you don't want one from a puppymill you want it to come from a loving caring place as well as have pedigree.

All the breeders I've had experience with in the ABC of A club all care deeply for their birds... you could email them and ask if they have an accessible site with pics... get in contact, talk to them, get to know them...

Getting perfect DT's is not easy, you may need to work with uneven or even ST's... I worked without tufts for years, to me it's the last piece of the puzzle... first was type, color variety, rumplessness then tufts and then egg color...

Mailing adult live birds is MUCH different than eggs... they go in only specific, approved boxes that are handled by hand... don't let distance discourage you, I've had several shipped to me w/out an incident ever... as long as it isn't too hot or too cold, they really do well...

The US just likes to do things the hard way, lol...

I don't think he shows anymore, plus most people just want rumpless, tufted and blue eggs... they don't realize how hard it is to get fully even, bilateral DT, rumpless and pure blue eggs on top of correct coloring... anyways, lol...

28 pens isn't hard to end up with, especially when working with multiple varieties and/or breeds... I have at least half that and still need more, lol...

Best to pick a single color variety and work from there or if you just want rumpless and tufted, go with mixed colors...

Yeah, I have a feeling this bird has challenges on every front.... I have 3 pens right now, and I'm considering having a 4th built - IF I can get some Araucanas! I'll do the best I can with them.

BTW, do you know anybody with red pyle Araucanas? Is anybody working on something like that?

I'd really like to work on Duckwings and/or BBR

If you're interested, there's a black roo (show lines) for sale on the Seattle CL site, $20 OBO.... I've been contemplating going to get him, but the owner didn't answer some of my questions about him - plus, Seattle traffic is no joke, I'm reluctant to make that drive, it would take all day.

Agreed - I've shipped and received, both across country, with no problems. Before I shipped, I took a small syringe and gave each bird some electrolytes and placed an apple in the box for them....I think it was in the fall, when I shipped.

I have no idea on the Red Pyles... never been a fan of that variety in any breed, lol...

LOL, I honestly have only seen a couple of birds that color, didn't even know such a thing existed! I'm not a big fan of white birds, but I'm partial to some red

Yes all tufts are welcome. Our first tufted birds were a single splash roo and a DT tailed hen with a major attitude... Lol. I still have that ill natured girl and old age and years of love plus treats have not softened her heart. Bless her.
So perfect tufts are not expected but with more clean faced hens than tufted a double tufted roo would help us breed more tufts into the flock in general.

We don't have any problems with combs or leg color so I wouldn't want to bring in any problems to work out on those.

A couple of the hens we hatched from eggs are on the small size. Good shape, meaty breasts, round rumps but a bit under standard size compared with our others. So we do desire a nicely sized shaped bird.

Colors as I said before are a work in progress. The blue black spash group is fine although not accepted color for large fowl we are happy with them. The silver duckwings are nice but not quite perfect wing marking definition just yet.

We also are doing really well with egg color. Ours are more true blue than many of the hatching eggs shipped to us at times.

I Am pleased to hear that others have had positive experiences shipping live adult birds. That was a concern for us. It seems the west has a nice amount of breeders and stock compared to Kentucky here.

We are patient with choosing new blood. The right one will come along. If not now spring will be here before we know it.

Thanks again for responding and any input from others is welcome.

On a side note, I began reading this thread weeks ago from the beginning. Im only a third of the way through. Very informative stuff. I don't see many of the original posters on the newer end of the thread. I hope everyone is well.

I just recently messaged a few breeders list on the Araucana breeder site and some either didn't reply or aren't selling eggs right now so if you find someone please pass that info along I would love some.... The one hen I hatched was the sweetest thing!

We will sure pass on any info on active breeders or activity in the Araucana world we find. Please do the same. Ive read this thread from the beginning up to 5000 something and there used to be a lot of info and exchanges of eggs or birds made here.
