Araucana thread anyone?

I'm sorry about your eggs.... the post office really gets under my skin about some of this stuff.

I sent my sister a box of canned goodies and dehydrated fruit - the p.o. managed to break the glass jars, so they discarded the whole package.... I was not happy, to say the least. I had that box packed tight, I don't understand how they broke it. - No wonder my hatching eggs didn't do anything!

Hello everyone!
Hope you all had a wonderful holiday. We have been hatching Araucana babies for the past few weeks. The last batch to hatch Monday. It has been fairly successful hatching. Lots of tufted and double tufted. *grins*
Sorry for the poor pic quality but I have to share.

They are so adorable!!!

Thank you! We found a few new Araucana near here and despite the hesitations that come with hatching in fall... My husband urged me to hatch what we could and we went to work on brooder boxes and 2 new heated grow out pens. Lots of work but so worth it. All together we have hatched over 40 beautiful babies.
If all goes well come spring hatching start up, I hope we can share.
And sorry all I just noticed my original post went through twice. I'll try to fix that.

Cute! What colors?

Thanks Ravyn. We have mostly duckwings, but we also have small groups of white, black, and blue black splash. So far this fall we did a hatch of all colors first then the last few hatches have been duckwing mainly but we did set a few black.
One thing that's curious with these hatches, and maybe some of you will have input because we have been baffling over it. We got 2 new duckwing roos, fine looking but clean faced. We decided to breed them with our hens just for new blood this fall regardless of tufts. Less than half our hens are tufted. Our hatch rate was 75 to 80 percent hatch the rest dead in the shell at the last stage. Of the hatched chicks, 75% are tufted and most double tufted. We have picked these 2 roos up and closely looked for peduncles but we aren't seeing anything? I don't know... Anyone else had experience with this?

Nice! I'm hoping to have my blacks improved enough next year so I can release some to others... have a GDW female, but no males... not sure if I'm gonna try to work with GDW or not...

Sounds like you got lucky in your %'s... the averages and %'s are based off of really large hatch numbers, so smaller sets the % can skew either way... sounds like your luck tipped for the better this year... :)

With Araucana, every hatch seems like the chicken lottery to me. Even more so with the duckwings.
I can't wait to see their big bird feathers.

There is a breeder in Penn that is working on Araucana he is awesome has a ton of info he isn't on here but I have chatted a lot w/ him on FB he has an Aracana page of FB Aracana Addiction. His birds are beautiful and Im hoping to get chicks from him at some point he's growing out his most recent batch so I have to wait...
