Araucana thread anyone?

She started laying on the 8th, a few days after I posted here. :celebrate These are her first three eggs. She's been laying regularly; took a break on the 9th and the 12th.

She's so curious and friendly, I'm super happy with her! The only downside is she'll try to peck at my freckles, so I've learned to cover up when I go down to the coop.
Congratulations! They are beautiful!

My 7 week old cockerels peck at me like that, too!

I love them. My old rooster was the chilliest rooster I've ever heard of. Never aggressive with humans, or our dog. Ever. Inspired me enough that I got another to raise. My hen and pullets are still young so they tend to avoid me unless they know I have treats... but I'm working on them...

That's good to hear! I was telling my DH that if I ever decided get a rooster for the hens (something I really don't see happening) I'd be inclined to go for an Araucana.

My Araucana was about 4 months old when I got her, I'm pleasantly surprised she's become so friendly. Food is indeed a great motivator!

Thank you!

:D

How do you find the Araucana personality, generally?
I agree with Frazz; you can't find better roosters. They are just not aggressive at all!
The hen's (in my experience) personalities are kind of all over the place. Some of mine act like I beat them daily if I move too fast or have a strange object in my hand, a few are very tame and almost clingy when I'm in with them, and some are just "there" with really no personalities.

Heh! Thanks! Care to share photos of your rooster?
Do you have any of your old rooster @Frazzemrat1 ? :pop

A couple of questions:

Those of you who free range; do the tufts impair visibility?

Those with mixed flocks; are the tufts a cause for bullying / being seen as different by the others?

Which one!? ;)

(He's actually triple tufted. The third one is that ball of feathers on his chest).

I wouldn't say tufts target them for bullying, but I've noticed hens are bad about picking at the male's tufts.

No Trish!!! Manny's #1!!!!!!!!! LOL

@Stiletto here's my Napoleon, a double tufted white, watching his ladies eat. He was stolen from me... yes stolen by a person.

And here's my new one; Varric, a single tufted gold duck wing. He's coming along... ;-)
