Araucana thread anyone?

Do you have Araucanas as well? If so, share :)
Not yet. Been searching for years and finally found someone willing to ship chicks and eggs to my state. Putting in an order in the coming weeks, but I'm trying to learn all I can before they come in case I need to get a specific male to get everything ready.

Hello AR world. Found a guy that may have black or blue Araucana tuffed hens/rooster within a reasonable 1-2 hr drive. Stated he ordered shipped eggs from Ann Charles. Maybe I'll get a pair for 2022?

I would definitely get (at least) a pair, probably more. I had no luck with tufted araucanas. people here avoid them as hatching rates are low.

That's why commercial hatcheries don't offer them as day chicks, lol.

But, Willow Acres out from Liberty Center, OH is closing out her Araucana stock due to her health according to FB. She was one of the few folks who would consistently offer day old Araucana chicks shipped. NPIP as well. This will lower many individuals opportunity the access to live Araucana chicks. Very few people willing to ship Araucana chicks in the US. Her website is https://www.ohiowillowacres.com/copy-of-ayam-cemani

Look her up on FB. I had ordered live chicks from her last year, but then covid hit and things happened so none were every shipped :(.

On side note, hatching young Araucana eggs = low hate rates. Tried it last hatch year, wasted tons of blue eggs. AR Roosters were confirmed fertile, as when I crossed them with brown layers for OE those eggs hatched out fine.

Got 2 lavender Orps hens few days ago. I want to get a dt black roo AR x lav Orp, to create split OE. The cross them again to see if I get any lavender chicks resembling AR traits. Eggs may not be blue (depends), but will breed towards Araucana features. This would be a project :). Would be cool to create some AR looking lavender chicks as a fun project?

I've been checking off what I need to know for ordering and have a few questions still I can't seem to find answers to.

1) Can tailed chicks have tufts? I know it sounds obvious, but I know some traits are linked to others and don't know if tufts are linked to rumplessness.
2) only tufted birds can throw tufted chicks right? And it can be a tufted bred to nontufted to still get some tufted? Or can cleanfaced ones throw tufteds?
3) I've read that it isn't good to breed rumpless to rumpless because it can start causing back problems. So should I keep a tailed male over rumpless females or a rumpless male over tailed females? Or does it not matter?
I can see both ways because hens use their tails to help move the male's DNA to it's right spot after breeding, but males do that tail touch with hens to introduce the sperm in the first place.

1) there are tufted birds with tails but they are not pure araucanas.
2) at least 1 bird has to be tufted if you want tufted chicks. clean faced throw clean faced only.
3) I breed(ed) rumpless to rumpless but I use only araucanas with a long back. tailed birds would throw tailed birds and they would not be considered araucanas.

Is there a reason that they wouldn't be considered pure just for having a tail? I know that they can't be shown with one, but I've also heard that not introducing tails periodically into lines can cause their backs to be too short for natural breeding and hoped to just combat that by keeping tails with rumpless

1) Yes, tailed chicks can have tuffs.
2) Cleanface can't throw tuffs. Needs 1 parent single or double tuff to pass off for tuff gene.
3) Like any poultry, select adult birds that meet the SOP for the breed. Keep offsprings that have longer backs for consistency. Or introduce longer backs to shorter backs to improve offspring. When making decisions about your keepers, overall body type should be a priority. Things like comb and eye color are easier to improve. Type should always triumph.
Lastly, you can always vent trim or do artificial insemination to improve fertility.

Araucanas SOP is one of the most messed up SOP. Because of it, many people give up as it is impossible to adhere to.

Everything I read said once you do AI, you couldn't go back, hence why I was wanting to avoid it. But okay, so rumpless to rumpless isn't a bad way to breed if they don't have short backs?
I'm getting mixed colors as it is, and will never show, I'm mainly getting them for myself and to make them more available in this state since I know some people have looked on and off for them.

How long should their backs be to keep them? Just so I know what to look for? Or would it be easier to just post pictures when I start weeding put the unnecessary ones?

Okay. And are the chicks thrown with a few tail feathers able to be spotted once fluffed? Or do they look rumpless until they start feathering out? The place I placed an order from claim to cull tailed chicks before they send shipments out, but now I'm not sure if that's only ones with literal tails or ones that have the feathers too
