Araucana thread anyone?

I will have you know that I love split pea soup. So Ha! LOL

I bred my girls to boys that did come out of blue eggs, so we will see how that plays out. One of my blues is still being a mommy so she is not laying right now but when she does her eggs are same color as the middle ones, nice teal blue. I love that color.

I think you must be right, a combo of tufts and muffs on the black chick. I can feel the peduncle and when I push it forward, it is all connected. I just took a close up of the back side of the tuft area and I can see what I think are black shafts for feathers in the bottom of all that white fluff. What got me thinking they might be tufts was the location on her head, they aren't cheeky little fluff balls like I've had on my EE chicks in the past. They looked like chipmunks, nothing like this black chick.

The other side isn't as impressive, another thing that made me think tufts, the muffs I've seen have been equal bilaterally.

I'm hoping it's a pullet. I'm betting on some pretty blue eggs. The Ameraucana (could have been EE) hens I had all laid very blue eggs, with one laying a pale green egg. This chick is out of a blue egg so I would suppose they could have been an Araucana mix.

It "is" possible that my other rooster, that is tufted, is the dad to this chick if those are tufts. It's just that all summer I've tried to get a chick from him and not one egg was fertile at all. It wasn't until after I switched roosters that I started getting fertile eggs. I would say there would have to be at least a small chance that Degas could have been the dad since I didn't wait to put Rudy in the pen and let Degas (whom I adore and want chicks from so much) free range. He follow me around and comes in the barn at night when I'm checking on everyone and gets on the table for a hug. He doesn't even flinch anymore, he actually seems to lean into me when I hug him and he will lay his head up against my shoulder. He's definitely spoiled. I can't wait to see this chick feathered out.

With those photos, it is quite definite that chick has a one muffs/beard allele. . . . The other photos don't quite show it, but yeah, that one certainly has muffs in there. And a beard. As it aged to the last photo with the blue/red coloring the beard disappears, as all do, then grow back out to the mature feathering.

Those are tufts. Have you compared them to the tufted chicks that hatched? It would be so cool if Degas is the dad. My splash roo wasn't wooing the girls cause I was his girl. I finally locked him up with them and ignored him. Took a couple of weeks but I got chicks and so did you.

You can see the feather shaft in your one pic. Definately tufts. Looks like they might be nice sized ones too. Congratulations.

Hey all, I just hatched out my first double-tufted chick about a week ago, and she looks like a splash too! I may have some other tufts but they had complications via hatching so they aren't visible yet
I ended up with like 7 out of 12 shipped eggs (splashes and blacks) so I'll definitely buy from them again! and my older birds are getting color, I have a black getting coppering around her neck, a splash with blue and buff splash spots, a lighter and darker duckwing and a half white half black chick along with my straight black chick!
And hopefully I'll have some Lav Araucanas hatch at the end of the month- Hopefully we'll see

I love the rumpless tufted not for sale roo on your auction site. Very pretty bird. So are all the others. Their color looks so soft. Very nice.

I just brought some young Araucana's home that my niece got for me from a local guy. They aren't in very good condition but I'll have them fat and sassy in no time. They don't have feathers on their backs, is this from pecking (too many to a pen), mites/lice etc, or are they just moulting? I've never seen any like this. They are a little lightweight too so I'll worm them a couple of times, safeguard then ivermectin. I've treated them for lice and they're in a quarantine pen, a large rabbit cage off the ground and away from my others. They are bright and active, no coughing, runny eyes or anything else. Just poor condition. I added some probiotics and vitamins to the feed and I'll add it again after worming.

Most are mixed up colors but pretty decent in type and all but one or two have tufts. Three of the 8 have tails but I'm going to give them a chance to show their good points before I would cull them. I think I need a good, solid colored (black) rooster with tufts and no tail for these pullets. Anyone have a spare? I think they are all pullets except one too. I'll take pictures tomorrow.
