I did buy 15 chicks from SkyBlueEgg. There was no choice on color variety and, of course, I didn't get a single blue/black/splash like I was hooping for, but I did get some beautiful birds and that was were I at last got some tufts for my flock. Now that I think about it, however, was unable to successfully hatch out 15 chicks so I did get a refund for some. She said that she only sold 4 sets of 15 chicks last year, so if you're interested, you'd have to watch her web site pretty closely and jump in there when she offers them for sale; they sell FAST.
Do we get to see photos of your chicks!?

Love your garden spot and your chickens look like they're in heaven. Mine are moulting too. I was planning to clean the coop out this week but decided to wait it out till they're done so it looks like a real mess of feathers everywhere. I love the greenery too, it's really cold here now and most of the green is now brown so I'm ready for spring already. At least no snow or ice yet

HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!! CONFUSED!!!!!!!!!!

I am hoping some of you Araucana experts can help me out. About 2 months ago I bought what I was told was 3 Buff Orpingtons. When I was picking them out one was a lighter yellow then the rest. I took that one because, I liked how she was a different color. I was told that Buff Orpingtons could have different shades but, I don't think this different. As she is getting older though she seems to be looking even more different. I thought something was wrong with her comb but, then I started to notice I think she is getting tufts. So I am thinking maybe the comb is not deformed after all maybe she has a Pea comb. She is really started to resemble Araucana. When she was chick though she didn't have that stripe down her back. I though all Araucanas had that chipmunk look as a chick. Is it possible that a solid light yellow chick could actually turn be an Araucana or do they always have that stripe as a baby? Thanks for the help. She is beautiful. I am just curious if I have a Easter Egger.

All my Araucanas are finally sexed, what a relief. I got lucky this time and have more girls than boys (by one lol). I have decided on two separate breeding groups, one with a gorgeous rumpless roo and the other with a tufted partially tailed roo (tail is almost non existent). I have two tufted hens and two rumpless hens and two clean faced with very small partial tails. I'm going to have a pen with the rumpless roo and the tufteds, and the tufted roo with the rumpless hens. I might give each roo one of the clean faceds. Does this sound okay?

Here is the rumpless roo who has a small amount of beard, what are the chances of him passing that on to his offspring if mated with tufted hens??

Here is one of my rumpless females, BOTH my rumpless girls look exactly like this. Very pretty, at least I think so.

Here is one of the tufted females. I was sure this was a boy until recently. She is of a different bloodline so I was actually hoping it was a boy. Oh well!

I am not so familiar with Buff Orpingtons, you really need to post pictures. Have you looked through the photo's here to compare?

I still have some young Araucana's that aren't sexed yet but I have been putting together my plan for spring. If any of them decide to start laying sooner, that's fine too. so far, here is my list - All Large Fowl - (I just sold Macho and Blot)

Rooster Degas, Wheaten? (tufted/rumpless) - Slinky (rumpless/clean faced) - laying now, duckwing
Rooster Rudy, Wheaten/red/black (rumpless/clean faced) - Fawn (tufted/partial tail) - still immature, white
Rooster Spot, Splash (tufted/rumpless) - Luvdove (tufted/partial tail) - still immature, blue splash?




Up and coming youngsters - I haven't named these yet. They range from a few days old to 5 months old. I have some of these pretty well figured out for sex but not absolutely.

Black (tufted/rumpless) - -pullet?
Black (clean faced/rumpless) - pullet?
Black (clean faced/rumpless) - cockerel?
Black (clean faced/rumpless) - pullet?
White (clean faced/rumpless) - no guess yet
Blue/red (tufted/rumpless) - cockerel?
Blue/red (tufted/partial tail) - pullet?
Chipmunk striped chick (rumpless/tufted) - BBR or duckwing

those that are looking for Bantam Araucana. I listed some eggs on the egg auction here. Mine are out of SkyBlueEgg chicks directly, eggs from SkyBlueEgg/Alan Stanford stock from lady in Fl. and the tufted ones I got are out of Bobbi Porto and?? (he couldn't remember the other person) I hatched out 3 from 4 eggs this summer because I had a broody with no other eggs to give her. Now I am ready to breed a little since getting Tufted birds in the mix. I have 3 broodys on 4 to 6 eggs each and just filled my incubator. So come and get them or we will eat them yum!!!

Araucanas, which is what this particular thread is focused on, are a very unique and rare blue egg laying chicken which is ideally rumples and tufted and has a pea comb. The Ameraucana is another blue egg laying breed and that standard calls for a tail, beard and muffs, and pea comb.
The Easter Egger is all other colored egg laying chicken - it's what the poultry world calls the mutt birds that have come from combining the two breeds and tossing in what ever other breed happens to be about. These birds can have what ever color, shape, comb type, etc. They simply should carry the genetic potential for the blue egg color.
