Araucana thread anyone?

Pied gene? Do you mean mottling? Mottling is recessive.

Have you bred the splash looking ones to anything but "white" or other mottled looking ones before? Neat colors, with the barring and all.. The first rooster certainly isn't an Araucana though. The second one looks to have a beard and slate legs with pink soles. . .

Have you checked the coloration of your birds' skin?

Love the last Duckwing.

I couldn't see the colors of the legs either. And I did have one Araucana Silver Duckwing Hen that had slate colored legs, and she was Araucana, she didn't pass the color to any of her offspring, infact I got some willow legged Duckwings out of her. It's not per the Standard or preferred, but she was still pure Araucana and not a Mix. When I got some chicks years ago from Gary a few of those chicks had what I called Pied colored legs, I don't have those birds anymore a dog wiped me out of them, I only had one Blue pullet from Garys birds that survived, which is where my Blue comes from in my flock she had nice blue lacing and red to the breast, almost like the Blue Version of BBR, I did get one light bluish pullet from a Hen that I got from Fritz, almost looks like Lavender but it's not, just sort of a dusty blue. My friend in Florida sent me a Lavender Rooster, about 2 months ago. And I did notice that the feathering on the Lavender was slower than my other birds feathering for coming in.

I like the Duckwing in the picture too.

The reason the roosters look like a red splash, mine show it too - (this one I culled, but he is indeed a splash cuckoo, believe it or not)

(another splash cuckoo, less gold leakage)

Are because both carry the unwanted blue leakage, however like on any other breed, the females do not express it physically. It is not a part of their color patterning to express it unless it is severe, then it will show up in the neck, as seen here on my molting blue cuckoo. . .

Notice the gold coloration on her neck.

Boy am I slow, A bell should've went off yesterday when I saw the pick of your splash cuckoo with the red leakage.

I just looked up the info that I have for my spash cock... surprise, surprise, surprise...

"His father came from Gary Ramey in North Carolina. His fathers name was Atlas..
his mother was one of two hens.. Oatmeal (a splash hen) or Gaia (a blue hen)."

So I can probably reclassify him as a splash cuckoo.

And now to come to think of it all (I thought) of my splash chicks were roosters with red leakage like their dad.

This pullet may be mine because she has no legband

But this definitely came from Ann

Thanks for the lesson on my birds guys. I'm beginning to see the light.

What's a regular splash look like? How can you differentiate between the regular splash and a cuckoo splash?

I have one regular Splash Rooster from Ann Charles, he's yellow legged and his body feather colors are all white, with only a few black streaks to his overall feathering.

I don't have any pictures of him, he came from one of Ann's birds and from a Rooster Ann showed named Bugly that was a white Rooster Ann got in a box of chicks from Nancy Utterbach, and Ann said even though he was white she got alot of Patterned Gened birds from him. I do have a picture of Bugly on my computer from Ann.

Ann keeps great records of her birds.

The males will have a lot of black or blue on them, and if you look closely, they have absolutely no blue tipping on their chest feathers and no apparent barring on their saddle feathers.

It looks almost like a little quail!

Also Megan I didn't tell you how desperately jealous of you and your sportsman I am. I have been out of town and reading the thread but not posting. Let me know how your first hatch in it goes. I am saving up for mine. By summer I want to have it. If you were really mean ( I mean nice) you would send me a pic of it.

If anything were to happen to my husband ( I certainly hope never cause he is awesome) my add will be " looking for georgous, strong, young, man with sportsman incubator. Please send photo of yourself standing next to incubator". LOL!!!

I love this thread, so much to learn still and still processing it but definitely learning something new everyday and I love the photo's

I didn't realize there were so many "other" color genes in the Araucana. I assumed all of the mixed colors were just mixed from the main, approved colors.
