I have my swatting stick ready and waiting because you know that the insanity is going to overtake you again at some point. Perhaps not this winter, but one of these upcoming cold, dark, boring days you're going to have THAT thought again and we will be waiting to drag you back from the brink. Unless, of course, we are similarly overcome ourselves with the hatching itch. In which case, you can count on us to jump right in there with you.
Hey, that sounds sort of fun!

Syble,
My fingers are still crossed, hoping for some peepers soon. If they're due to hatch Sat, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't start tomorrow night. I've been having a run on chicks hatching about 12 hours before I'm thinking they should and wondering if I counted right on the days. I usually set mine in the evenings.

Ann,
What is your chick count? Colors? Hope they're doing well and you've had a good number hatch.

My 4 recently hatched chicks are doing well, the blue chick (#2) looks like "possible" double tufts but the down is really thick on this chick. One of the chipmunck striped chicks (#1) that has typical striping for duckwing looks clean faced, the black (#3) probably clean faced but there is a bit of fuzz I can't tell about yet. The last chick to hatch (#4) looks like one large tuft on one side and the striping is "different" than I've seen before....anyone able to tell anything from the striping patterns?

Here is chick #4 check out the striping, it's got an unusual shape. The only one I've hatched before that had such scanty striping was the red chick.

I still have trouble seeing them till they start growing feathers unless they're huge

The blue chick, I'm pretty sure this one is tufted but there is so much down. I usually get out the magnifier when they're old enough I can see the shafts.

The "typical" chipmunk, anyway what I'm used to seeing on my own.

I just couldn't help myself. I finally got some tufted birds after 2 yrs of non tufted hatching from purchased eggs or being sold chicks that were supposed to have some with tufts and didn't and had to do some of my own breeding. The best part is they cost me nothing but shipping!!!! I traded 6 Ringed Teal for 8 Tufted Araucana 6 hens and 2 roo's. They weren't perfect but I didn't expect them to be. I got better chicks from breeding with mine stock and gave away of the 2 Roo's to a Sanctuary place the other night when she came to buy my 22 Silkies. I wanted more room to breed Araucana lol. maybe later in summer

an eventful night! I tried to log on to BYC last night late, like 11:30ish and my anti-virus was blocking it, a trojen injector virus of some sort was apparently on the loose, so if you were on last night you might want to do an in depth virus scan! I had no problems anywhere else but here.

On to the fun stuff! Thursday night 2 ginger eggs had piped, by noon today when i got home from work i have 2 chipmunkesque babies out. no idea if they have tufts, but they look tailess. how on earth do you look for tufts?! their fuzz is sooo long and curly! There are 3 more eggs piped leaving 4 doing nothing, 1 i'm almost 99.9% sure is a late stopper. so that really leaves 3 to go. Come on chickies!!! If they're anything like my turkeys i could be waiting till saturday for the last ones haha. Best bit is that i wont know until like the 22 or around there because that's my next hatch, so until then i wont know if its this incubator running hot or the other one. fingers crossed for some blue babies!!!
