Araucana thread anyone?

Congrats! Hatching chicks is SO exciting! I know I was absolutely glued to the incubator when I had chicks hatching. And more than likely as the first little one is drying off and getting its balance in order, it'll stimulate the others to hatch

Gosh, this cuckoo girl is growing into such a lovely young lady! She is so sweet, too!

I captured this adorable picture last night as I was putting the chickens to bed. The lass in the middle had her wings over the other two girls! Snuggling is the best way to stay warm! I am making this shot into my new avatar

Way to go little one! We were watching a biology documentary the other day and they just happened to be using the chicken incubation and fetal growth process to demonstrate some basic principles. It is simply amazing, the complex process that gets an egg from a single fertilized cell to a full grown, nourished, strong and able chick! Such a beautiful process.

Well, my little splash pullet died today. I found her in the coop when I went out to check on them just now. I don't know what happened. Her comb was pale and she seemed a tad subdued, but I honestly didn't know what to do except keep checking on her. I kinda knew what was going to happen when I went out and everyone was in the yard but her. Sigh. I am sad.

Uhg. I am sorry - I hate it when that happens. Sometimes these chickens are so tough and invincible and then they just die. I am so sorry! It's the sad side of chicken ownership for sure.

What's frustrating is that I saw signs of her not being quite right, but I have no clue what might have caused it. Nothing has changed in the way I care for them- no new food, no new anything. I wonder if it wasn't something to do with her bottom. I have posted before about how I have to trim their vent feathers like my mom has to cover her roots. They just stayed a bit of a mess no matter what.

Well, I was warned about these birds, so I understand setbacks happen. She was a real nice little bird, though.
