I just hope I get one tufted something to replace her...

Kygoatgirl, those are some pretty birds! But I have no idea what they would be called

Thanks. It is the same bird in both pics. The female I have not posted because I don't have a good pic of her. They look identical except she is clean faced with the paler comb and her legs are so pale they look almost white.

Loved looking at all the pictures on this thread. Now i HAVE to home some bantam Araucanas! Does anyone have any bantam hatching eggs for sale or perhaps chicks? Any tips on finding some quality birds would be appreciated. I do plan to show if i am fortunate enough to find or produce my own flock someday but i am in the "learning phase" right now and am soaking up any information i can find on this fascinating breed of chicken. Thanks all! Ruth

Well, he's not a true pure Duckwing, so that's a start. . . . If you have a clean faced hen that looks like him, I'd like to see a pic of her.

She's likely got yellow legs because she's a splash, which is okay. But him - Not so much.

If you want to work to green legs, I'd replace the rooster. I know it would be a tough thing to do, but I don't think he's a good breeding bird with his plumage-leg color combo. As much as I love duckwing and big Araucanas, I had to cull some males who were very nice but had yellow legs.

The question is, what do you want to breed to? How important is it for you to breed a recognized color? Because that's where the ticket is - If I know the color of your hen, that allows me to tell you what would be the best option of a rooster, but if you don't care as much about plumage color, go with any male to replace that's got green legs, or, that is cuckoo or splash colored but with yellow legs.

Thanks Illia...I really appreciate your input. I have been trying to soak up info on this breed for years and have finally aquired them but I don't seem to understand what I am looking at with these two. I thought duckwing but I am really not sure.
When I aquired them it was just for fun and to piddle with. I had hopes to breed some to standard at the some point. Here she is. Not good pics though. If not a young duckwing....what do you think they are? If they where yours what would you do with them?

Gary, if you're out there - nice splash cockerels - that first guy is so wonderfully solid. Good luck with your auctions.

Lanae, if I don't get those blues from you soon, I'm going to go mad! I have everything all ready for them and now I'm just waiting, waiting, waiting...... The story of my life right now...... I'm biking my two year old and my four year old everywhere while I wait for my new (to me) vehicle to get here from CA; it's going to be a very good day when my new wheels arrive, bearing my long desired BLUE ARAUCANAS.

Two more weeks.
Speaking of which - does anyone have any ideas for me - I'm a little worried about the weather change that these Araucanas are going to experience. It is already getting down to right at freezing at nights and the days are not warming up very quickly. I keep hearing about how hot it is in CA right now, so a big change for these birds. What, if anything, should I do to help them make the sudden switch? Obviously I will have them nice dry, insulated housing.

How's the broody hen doing? Did she hatch out chicks?

Did I miss something? Or are we talking about a show?

Well, my oldest Araucana chicks are now sexable. . . One of my tufted ones is a Silver Duckwing male (

) My other two from the same hen are girls, one likely a Silver Duckwing female the other looks like a Blue-based BBR/Gold Duckwing. That or the Silver Duckwing is blue based, not really sure just yet but the Silver one is obviously carrying Columbian. Pics soon.

My other oldest hatch had one tufted rumpless, one tailed clean faced, and a rumpless clean faced. They were under the broody girls, and, that didn't go smooth the entire way - One morning, it just had to happen,

the tufted rumpless one was dead. Possibly squished or something.

So, my remaining two I put in the brooder and it so happens to be that they're smaller than the others who are a week younger. No telling gender quite yet.

My youngest batch of two beautifully bilaterally tufted chicks are too young to sex, but they're going to be some cute little Quail colored ones, one a Blue Quail and the other a Quail.

And we have our first chick!! It didnt take very long at all, when I last posted, it was just small hole and now an hour later I have this! I am so happy and Beth I can't thank you enough!!
