Araucana thread anyone?

In the next few days or so I will be saying goodbye to my group of chicks I hatched for another BYCer! They're the best bunch of chicks yet, but I really want to share the breed with someone who I think will be passionate about them. Kinda funny how well it all worked out!

At least I'll be hatching some more soon, I hope. Out of a 'stash' of eggs I found, six are developing. I didn't know how long they'd been hidden, so six is better than none! I need some pullets so badly, haha!

We have put over 500 miles on our vehicle and still not there to pick up our chicks that we are adopting. We plan on being there Thurs...maybe Fri but will keep you posted. On our way to Keewanaw peninsula to look for agates first. No real luck yet. In Marquette right now. See you in a few days. Give each one a hug and kiss tonight and tell them momma is on her way.

And by cuckoo you all mean the darker one, Blackbeard, right? I am not good with my colors. In fact, waht color would the light one, Edith, be?

Hi all. I just discovered this thread tonight, so I haven't gotten a chance to read all the way through it. I just ordered my first Araucana hatching eggs today, so I'm eagerly awaiting their arrival and reading up in the meantime.

When I was in college, we had a field station with all kinds of animals, and I spent my time there working with what we called rumpless chickens. They were bantams (or very small standards), all the colors of the rainbow, and laid colored eggs. They had beards and muffs, but I never saw an ear tuft. Their rumpless trait worked the same way the tufted gene does--dominant and lethal in the homozygous state. Does anyone here know what breed these chickens were? And is the Araucana rumpless trait from a different gene? Thanks!

Welcome!

I'd assume the rumplessness you were working with is the same as the rumpless found in current Araucanas. It actually isn't a lethal gene, even when homozygous. The problem with a rumpless bird is that sometimes they can't get the cloacael touch done correctly, so they can have reduced fertility. I found mine started out with abysmal fertility at the start of spring (when they became very active with mating), but as the weeks went on, fertility got much better.
