BC,
does any one have experience with this breed? What is their purpose (Layers/broilers)? Not really looking at getting any, just curious since I was out yesterday (with my "mini encyclodedia of Chicken breeds") and was able to identify the really nice looking roosters

Feathersite - Ardenners

- Not much info but obviously not a meat bird.

Just as a little hint though - The only "broilers" out there are modernized crosses like Freedom Rangers and Cornish X's. Anything else are either dual purpose, production bred, or for other reasons. (such as fighting, setting, etc)

Thanks, I couldn't find much online either. they must be in the "other" categorie, I found somewhere that mentioned they only lay 150 +- eggs a year so... Pretty birds but won't fulfill my needs

They sound pretty rare anyway, so if you didn't actually find some available there is an extremely slim chance you'll find any in the future. Feathersite is pretty good at telling you what is common and what isn't by how many photos/how much info is offered.

Ardenners are from Belgium....They come in single combs, both tailed and rumpless varieties....darker gypsy colored faces and earlobes...esp. the hens. Very dark leg color....In the Flemish speaking part of Belgium they are also known as the "Walloon chicken". Colors recognized are: partridge, silver partridge, white, black, golden necked black (similar to our brown-red), silver necked black (similar to our birchen), golden salmon, and silver salmon. They are even quite rare in Belgium.... The breed is also known for it's flying ability.... They can scale to the top of most anything. A older dual purpose breed that is very striking and proud in appearance. I hope this helps you....(?) Regards, Rusty
