Title pretty much sums it up.
Planning to process a few Cornish x next week. This is my first time so I am trying to plan for all the details with a goal of MINIMAL waste. Don't want to drop the ball on the last step.
They will be about 6-7 weeks old and about 6 lbs. Will the 2 gallon ziploc freezer bags be sufficient? The dimensions are 10 3/4in x 10 1/2in.
How do you guys store your whole birds?

I was using my vacuum sealer, but it broke due to age.

I am thinking about trying the shrink bags next time or buying a new vacuum sealer.

I am sure that people use Ziploc bags, I am just unsure their method for using them.

They will fit. They also will freezer burn in a few months.
I use vacuum sealer and they keep for a couple years

Thank you. I was just looking at the shrink bags and they are like 30 bucks. I will get them if necessary but I figure if i can use a 5 dollar box of ziplocs, I would save the 25 dollars.

I am following because I want to know the answer too because I have a lot of chickens to do at the end of this month.

No doubt. I am really paranoid about waste/freezer burn. We are storing most of our meat at my inlaws cause they have a huge freezer so I won't be able to monitor it. @Molpet response already has me leaning toward the shrink bags. I don't want to go pick up my monthly meat and have freezer burn!
Conversely, I am only doing 12 birds with a projected storage time of 4 months max. So don't really know if the shrink bags are necessary for this batch. Looking forward to others opinions.

Stick a straw in the cavity, with the end not touching the bird, sticking out of the bag. Put the ziplock almost closed with the straw sticking out, bird in bag, in a container of water to force the air out. Suck air out and finish closing it. Then double bag.

Found a regional seller of the bags from my home state. Got 25 bags with zipties and freezer labels for 21.95. It was worth the extra bread to have peace of mind about my meat's longevity. Thanks for the opinions @Molpet & @FortCluck . I can't wait to see the finished product!

I've used Ziplocs, vacuum sealer, and now the shrink bags. For whole birds, you honestly can't beat the shrink bags, I really like them. The vacuum sealer bags are expensive for ones big enough for birds, and it wrinkles them all up. I still do pieces in the vacuum sealer, but not whole birds.

Appreciate your input! I am glad I got some shrinkk bags.
