I’ve had Noir marans before and they were hefty chicks.

I have a BCM who is half the size of all my other chicks. It’s suffering from chronic pasty butt for several days, but I haven’t had to clean her since this morning, so I’m hoping that’s past.

I’ve seen her eating and drinking well today. She’s noisy and kind of bowling balls through the other chicks.

I’ve lost 2/9 chicks, and I’m really hoping she makes it! I’ve had her for a week, so she’s probably a week and a few days old.

Chick size for a breed is an individual thing. Marana aren't real big birds at around 7 pounds as adults, but they aren't smaller either. They don't tend to be as fluffy as chicks as some other breeds. Hopefully it hangs in there for you. Sorry you lost some. I know how bad that feels.

My Marans matured alot slower than the rest of the breeds I got her with. To the point where I even looked it up to see if she was stunted or something as well! After looking it up online last year I found that most poultry research sites state that Marans are generally a slower maturing breed due to a specific gene that not all of them have, its based on breeding pratices i guess. She's the same size as everybody else now as adults but she was definitely smaller than everyone else and much slower growing and much slower feathering than everyone else when she was a chick.

She’s a feisty little thing!
