I've heard that you should only feed limited amounts of kale, cabbage, brocoli, cauliflower, or any other veggies of that species.Kale is great. I grow it for my ducks and it is a favorite. It handles frost well but needs some protection for real cold deep freezing. Grows quickly, even in cool weather. Nutritious. It must be fenced off or the ducks will kill the plants. I always have some growing now. I can keep kale going for close to a year before it dies from frost or setting seed. I let a few plants go to seed a couple of years ago and saved all the seed. I still have over a quart of the kale seed. I just store it in my refrigerator after making sure it was good an dry. The seeds last for years this way. A few others are dandelions, swiss chard, and bok choy. Any of the cabbage family such as the kale usually like cooler weather so they make great winter garden greens for both me and my birds.
Can you list where you found that information? I would be interested in any studies on it. I have done lots of searching on safe plants for my ducks because I have them in my garden. I found some mention water cabbage/lettuce which is a different species from regular cabbage as harmful for ducks but lots and lots of reputable sites on bird care recommending cabbage and kale and broccoli for birds of different types. I know that spinach is considered a no-no too and its in another plant family as well. As far as I have seen from my readings the cabbage family is safe as long as your not feeding it so much that its crowding out other things the birds need. Like almost anything its a part of a healthy diet as a treat not as a replacement for regular balanced feed.I've heard that you should only feed limited amounts of kale, cabbage, brocoli, cauliflower, or any other veggies of that species.
