We're beginners, getting set up for our first chickens - for eggs and fun companions. We're on 1/3 acre in a Southern California suburb. Zoned for hens but no roosters. Would like a quieter breed we can handle. After reading several posts about quietness, wonder if it depends on the individual chicken, the breeder, or the breed?
Need some advice please:
1) How QUIET is the Bielefelder auto-sexed breed? Compared to other backyard chickens? If you have quiet Bielefelders, where did you buy them? Is their auto-sexing so reliable that no one has bought a 'hen' who turned out to be a rooster?
2) Is anyone breeding/selecting for QUIETNESS? In any chicken breed? From the posts about neighbor issues, would seem there could be considerable profit in that?
Thanks so much for your advice!
