Are canadian geese illegal to have?

Okay, so my hubbies cousin works at a college, and there has been a canadian goose there all year, had babies, and everything. But its leg is broken so it cannot fly away, like all the other geese did. So cousin, was trying to get me to take it, I have no experiance with geese, and I figured it was illegal to take one out of the wild. Plus I have no experiance with Broken legs. I told him to call the DEC, which he did. The dec said to take it to the vet, and keep it until it can fly south for the winter, because it will just get eaten by coyotes, and they dont want to deal with it. The closet vet is almost 2 hours away, and I really cant have it. I just figured it would be illegal to keep it.

Yes it is illegal to own a wild goose. I think there is some sort of license or something that you can get as a rescuer that allows it but the DEC is right, the goose either needs to be left alone or taken to a vet.

They didnt say to leave it alone, they said they didnt want to deal with it, so for my bfs cousin to take it to the vet, or its going to get eaten by coyotes. Or something.

If you can afford to take it to a vet and care for it, I would do so. It might even be possible to find a vet who will keep it until it is ready to go. Or, you can contact other waterfowl rescue agencies in the region and see what they say.

If DEC gives you permission to keep it until it heals, make sure you get something in writing in case there's trouble. Chances are there won't be any trouble, but it's always good to have something in writing to back you up.

It is illegal to keep a wild-caught Canada goose.

States are going to vary. You would have to have a rehabber's license in Oregon to have that goose confined on your property.

A vet is going to charge a pretty penny to do X-rays and set a bone. That's going to involve anesthetic. He's very unlikely to do it for free. And that's if you can find a vet who knows how to work on a goose.

Have you called around to find a wildlife rehabber that might take the goose? Is there a zoo? Can you call the zoo and ask if they know how to get hold of any rehabbers?

Yes the zoo or university would be able to refer you to a rehabber. Or you can take on the challenge yourself by getting some special permit until the geese is old enough to fly on its own. Be prepared for alot of work.

A broken leg shouldn't stop a Canada (not Canadian) goose from flying.

Well, it cant push its self off the ground with a broken leg. So it cant fly.

I could afford to take it to the vet, but I dont have my liscence to drive , ive been lazy about that. Also, the closest bird vet is 2 hours away, and I have never heard of any rehabilating areas around where I live. It sounds terrible, but I think I am going to let nature take its course.
