For the most part, hens lay in the same nesting box because when they see another egg, their motherly instinct kicks in, and they want to lay in that spot. This is why some people use fake eggs to get their hens to lay eggs in the nest boxes. My suggestion for someone who is annoyed about their chickens squabbling over nest boxes, is to make a single nest box. This means there are no walls to separate the hens. It's just one big nesting box. If you do this, make sure the opening to the nest box is small, so the hen inside the nest box feels secure, and safe. I hope this helps.
Oh my goodness i just signed up to byc less than a hour ago and iam so happy that people replied back to me so quickly and kindly i have a great feeling this is going to be a great experience with all you chicken lovers............THANKS SO SO MUCH GUYS
For clarification, we had built a 3 foot long trough as the chicken box. The chickens arranged 3 nests side by side but usually sat on the same one at different times, though sometimes we would find them sitting at the same time in separate nests or eggs in separate nests. One day I saw 2 chickens sitting side by side in the same one! Another time I saw one standing slightly to push an egg out while another chicken was trying to nudge its way onto the same nest! Chickens are funny!
