Are Chickens a Danger to Horses? Bad Couple Months With Neighbors

Quote:

I worked at a ranch that had free-roaming chickens, ducks and turkeys and the horses got used to them. That being said, when one of the ducks wandered into a neighbor's yard, it became dinner.

No matter how trivial it sounds but it's the chicken owners to keep their birds contained. We are responsible for our chicken's welfare and they are responsible for their horses/rider's welfare too.

Keep your birds on your property and you won't have to deal with tension with your neighbor.

Remember the old farmer's adage: "Good fences make good neighbors"

Send an apology letter to the neighbors along with some eggs. And pen up your birds on your property.

Good luck!

Sorry based on what those horses are doing it could be dangerous to have a "Suddenly Chicken" moment.

Send a letter ask for your hen back after you secure your birds.

Also boarded horses there, or non resident horses being trained there may not be chicken safe.

They may have their own chicks to acclimate their horses to birds.

I wouldn't give neighbors eggs. IMO.

Giving eggs to neighbors as a peace offering is not a good idea. YOu can ask if they would like to have some eggs or if they ask for it. If you give it to them as peace offering, sometimes some nutcases would yell salmonella poisoning by your eggs.

With this neighbor having their own chickens, they may be the same reason as the OP, fresh eggs.

I don't have a horse of my own yet but I have experience with horses and ride at my friends house all the time... One time I was there and she was tacking up on the crossties when a chicken (who are ALWAYS around the horses) walked between the horses leg and she reared up and broke the florecsent (sp?) lights over her head! Granted, the horse wasn't injured but she could have been severely cut!

Hope this helps as a good example that horses can be unpredictable.....

It does not matter what animal they have or how the animals interact. They have a right to expect you to keep your animals on your property, period.

I've seen horses that can be spooked by saying "boo" to them. And a spooked horse can be dangerous! You really should keep them on your own property. They could get trampled.

I am afraid I have to agree with everyone else, I have ponies and chickens and but they are not kept in the same place, if they were I am sure the ponies would get used to the chickens and its my problem if they spooked etc, what wouldn't be my problem is if someone let their chickens onto my yard and something happened to either the ponies or the chickens, that would be the chicken owners problem am afriad and they would have to deal with it.
Ponies see 'monsters' in alot of things if they dont' know what they are and if these horses are expensive I think the owner is right in complaining about it!
My chickens wander into my neighbours garden which her and her children love, on the other hand the neighbour on the other side has complained about it so my chickens for the best part stay in their run!!

I have had horses for years so I know how easy it is for horses to be injured, even if they live in a padded stall

We horse folks can get pretty indignant if somthing outside our control causes an injury because we have enough trouble keeping them safe in the best conditions. From the look of their website they have some EXPENSIVE horses. I wouldn't want to be responsible for causing the slightest scratch.
