Mine are all pets. :) It's nice to have a smaller flock cause then I think that you can get to know them more. I have four and they each have names. Bisquick, Buttermilk Snap, and Junior. :3 My Dad says that their eggs are their 'rent.' But, he's just kidding. :)

In my opinion, they are one of the worlds greatest pets! Mine come when called and love cuddles. When mine stop laying, they will still have a nice comfy 'retirement home' at my house. I call the coop 'Hen Haven'. :D

I would say Pets...but if culling becomes necessary for the greater good then I can do that...with some difficulty and lump in my throat, but I would do it to end suffering or a problem with the flock. IDK. They all have names and we go out of our way to make sure they are tucked in at night (like last night--right in the middle of trick or treating--back home to tuck in and then back out trick or treating). We've culled because there was too many Roosters. Chickens--I call them my livestock though. Checked my livestock ordinances before I got them. But then I'm making them home-made apple and cinnamon flock blocks in my oven to spoil them... I suppose there's quite a few of us out there that walk this slippery slope.

Pets! whenever I mention chicken as pets my dad roles his eyes since he only thinks of them as food running around our yard! But my dad and I have never seen eye to eye on stuff so I don't care what he thinks! I would never let any of them be culled! They are awesome and make great pets with great little personalities!

oh and they'r very soft!

We have had our girls for almost 3 months now and we love them to death! They all have names too. We are hooked and will probably have them for good. We wish we had a bigger yard so we could have more! I'm thinking a flock of 10 to 20 some day. We treat our girls as of they were a dog or cat we take care of them daily so they our family to us! We just keep in mind that one day when it costs more to feed them then we get in eggs that we will be using them for meat or trying to give them to someone who wants older hens... I don't think we have to worry about that for 3 to 4 years!

Ours are "pets with a purpose". But if the zombie apocalypse comes, they will be livestock!

Pet or Not? It all depends on the owner.
My flock chickens are not pets, they are livestock. They are on the farm to serve a purpose; that being said, I care for my livestock just as well as I care for my pets. All of my chickens are healthy and happy for the entire length of stay on the farm. I'm proud to sell eggs and meat birds that are naturally and ethically raised.

I love my birds, all of them. Right now I have 6 teenage chickens, 14 baby chicks (4 girls, 10 boys - the boys were sent along with the 4 girls and 2 goslings I purchased a couple of weeks ago), 2 goslings (I have no idea what kind, just that they are soooo cute), and 2 silky soft black (male) and black and white (female) bunny rabbits. I also have 6 house cats!
I just yesterday ordered 2 more geese and 3 ducks. I was hooked the first time I help my first baby chick (one of the original 6) and when the goslings arrived and they imprinted on me that way it... Hook, line and sinker - gone overboard! My son just laughs at me when I talk all about my birds as babies, being that he is 15 soon to be 16 he can't see them other than more work.

Me I just love how they squack at me when they hear my voice when I walk through the front door of the house... My mother (who moved in with us) says I better go out and say hi to them before they disturb the entire neighborhood.

I haven't named the goslings yet as i am not sure if they are girls or boys although I am leaning toward Alex for mine as that could be a boy or girl name. I gave the all yellow gosling to my son as he wanted one of them but he has had no interest at all in it so I think I will call it Gannet after the northern Gannet

This bird dives for the fish under the water and reminds me of our little yellow water diving gosling. Cool so Alex and Gannet.
