Are chickens really bird brains?

HorseJody, I love that image! My OEG roos are the first on the alert. I watched them herd their girls into the coop enclosure when they heard hawks fighting with some wild birds yesterday. The rest of the flock could fend for themselves. They freak when planes go by, too. Curlers, snicker...

Horsejody, that's hilarious.

I have a birchen cochin hen with the same attitude. They'd probably like to get together and play a mean hand of cards. Our daschund steps widely around that one! Her mate, our birchen cochin roo (they're both bantams) tries to make himself taller and on the look out-thank goodness nothing yet, but he seems to keep an eye out. The only thing he's alerted us to yet is when it's going to rain. He's better than the weatherman.

My chickens pay ABSOLUTELY no attention to my dogs, matter of fact they peck them if they get to close.

Now let someone bring a strange dog into the yard they don't know and it's heads up, tails up, wings down in the ready to take flight position and all kinds of squwaking and they usually try to "sneak" into the coop (they walk real slow as if they are trying not to draw attention to themselves) and up onto their roosts.

When mine are in the run they generally don't pay much attention to the hawks, I honestly believe they know their run is covered and they are protected, now if they are out free ranging and a hawk is spotted and the rooster gives the hawk warning call they run for cover. This is why they are not allowed out unless I will be out with them, the skies over my place are like the skies of Ohare airport, too crowded.

We have had daytime and nighttime attacks on the chickens. Nighttime seemed to be the most devastating. Most of the chickens were asleep and were easy to kill. The few that woke up were easy to run down, although they did get far.
During the day I have seen a coyote dart out of a bush and nail a bird.(he didn't get to far)

We had a neighbors dog run after them and some of them actuallly seemed to run in circles. Others hid under some of the bushy flowers and were still. Luckily the dog stopped when his name was yelled and all he ended up with was a few tailfeathers in his mouth. Our chickens have no fear of our cats and will actually fight with them over the cat food. Getting beat with their wings and pecked on the head is too much for our well fed cats. Besides that I have some birds that may appear on the next Jenny Craig commercials.Yikes!
