Yes they're very smart. I can't speak from experience since i've never had chickens yet but I know people who have chickens who say they're smart.
People say ducks arent very smart but I know that isnt true at all. 2 of mine are extremly intelligent, waaaay smarter than my 5 dogs, and people say dogs are supposed to be smart. Dill n Will (my 2 ducks) learned tricks and know many things that I'm saying.
I think people underestimate intelligence in animals. Did you know rats are as smart as the average 6 yr old child? I think the reason people underestimate fowl's intelligence is because generally when theyre in a flock they don't hang out with humans much and mainly stay with their own kind so they don't learn anything. My ducks are like that and the only reason 2 aren't is because they arent in a flock and they come indoors every night. so they learn what all sorts of things mean. Also, if you don't talk to your chickens much (actually, this goes for all animals) then how are they supposed learn things? Liek for getting in the road, if they were told "BAD!" everytime they got in the road and then put in "Time out" they probably wouldn't do it anymore after you do that several times. I've taught my duck not to get in the pond like that (its a stagnant retention pond so its not safe for them. they have kiddie pools to bathe in)
