Are chickens sensitive to sound

They run for cover because they don't understand what is happening. Their ears will not be damaged unless they are exposed over a long time, and louder then a lawn mower 50 feet away.
I think if they can escape to a safe distance they will not suffer any hearing problems.

Mine don't care at all if a loud machine is running, mower, skill saw, hammering. I was suprised! I guess I conditioned them to loud noise when they were babies since I drop things like the brooder lamp. CLANG!!

When my chickens were little they actually didn't mind the mower and just moved to avoid the mower. Now..they are terrified and run for their lives. I like to keep them in their coop til I am done.

I've watched mine deal with yard sounds, truck horns and mowers. They aren't phases. I think of it like running the vacuum when you have babies. If you don't ever run them the babies get used to quiet and can't sleep when there's noise. I know my son can sleep through EVERYTHING. Ha ha

My chickens just head for the coop and stay there until the mowing is finished. They don't seem to mind it terribly much. However the neighbor had some major work going on and there was a lot of noise during one of the days. My only egg laying chicken would not lay her regularly scheduled egg, until the next day. I thought that this was a fluke until 3 days later same thing. hammering all day long, and no egg, However there was an egg the next morning and she was back up to her normal schedule.
