Ok so first I wanted chickens LOL, so we hatched chicks in February and are keeping all the hens. Now I really want 2 ducks too. Problem is this. When I called our city to ask if it is okay for chickens they said there is no ordinance against them but if they are loud such as roosters and neighbors complain then I would have to get rid of the roosters which is fine as I just wanted hens for eggs anyways. But are ducks loud? If I get 2 ducks will they be noisy enough to bother my neighbors? I do live in a neighborhood.

Depends on the breed... Domestic ducks descending from the mallard are fairly loud when they quack, only the females. Muscovies are quiet and so are many wild breeds like mandarin and wood ducks, but you need aviaries for them or they will fly away.

Females(other than Muscovies) quack. My pekings are quakers already at 7 weeks of age. Not as loud as a rooster or a barking dog and only really quack when they are hungry or when something startles them. Depends on how much space you have and how tolerant your neighbors are. In their house at night they are quite during the day theymay make a little noise such as when frollincking in a pool or when you come out to feed them.

I live in a suburban area and have 10 ducks as well as a few drakes. They can be very loud at times but I lock them up at night in the shed to try to keep the noise down. 2 wouldnt be quite so bad- and if you decide on Muscovies - Your neighbours will probably never even know you have them if you dont tell them.

Yeah females of varying breeds are loud, but the good news is that it's a sound that dissipates and blends in to background nature sounds pretty well. My girl is constantly quacking in the backyard, and my neighbors say they have seldom even heard her, and when they do it's no worse than the cardinals and woodpeckers.

Cayugas are considered "one of the more quiet breeds." Mine don't quack very much at all, unless they are startled by something. Only the female quack is really heard, anyway; the male has a much deeper, hoarse sounding quack, and he's even more quiet than the drake.

And they're gorgeous, as well as personable.
