Are egg songs really that loud?

Mine are pretty loud after they lay. I get the bawk bawk bawk bwak BAKAWWWWW!!!! I know my neighbors have to hear it, but they have never complained. It usually lasts only about a minute, but it seems like 15. Most of my laying is done by mid-morning. The rest of the day they are as quiet as church mice.

It is loud but for maybe 15-30 seconds, the rest of the day they are not even noticable. Not nearly as annoying as someones dog that won't shut up. Brib your neighbors with some eggs if you think it will be a problem. Unless your illegally owning chickens I would not worry about it.

Ohh....when do they usually do this?

Usually after laying, and it is usually started by one hen, then the rooster gets it going and everyone else starts. It is not always for very long though; sometimes it has lasted for 10-15 minutes, sometimes for less than a minute, and sometimes not at all. If you have a small number of chickens, it probably won't be all that loud; say, 5 or 6 (I have 15 or so). It's mostly the rooster that encourages the hens to be loud, so if you don't have one, perhaps they will be quieter.

I've got nine hens, no roosters. Two of the girls get so involved in the laying, they cannot shut up about it -- before, during, and especially after. My eight-year-old son calls it their egg-laying speech because they stand up so tall, project their voices, and announce to the neighborhood about how awesome they are to have just layed the world's most perfect egg. The good news is that it tends to happen for only a few minutes in the middle of the day when most people are either at work or at their most forgiving. They are totally, perfectly quiet at all other times of the day. I wouldn't let the egg song stop you from getting your chickens. Just make sure you are following local ordinances and/or getting your neighbors' buy-in. It will give you a chance to talk to them, right?

I have never even heard of this...What is this sound? Sometimes my chickens go crazy noisy...maybe I will have to check next time. Though they do this crazy insane thing occasionally.

Mine I can usually hear from the back door, but not inside the house.

Last night though... geeze, I must have screwed up their routine. I'd NEVER heard so much noise in my life. Even Rooster was cramming his feathers in his ears.
