I've wanted Emus for a long while now. There is a pair that just went on Craigslist, however I am a bit wary of buying any. Acreage is not a problem here, we've got around 30. I am worried about my dog though, he runs wild, but he's small, about the size of a coyote. speaking of coyotes, we have them here, and lots. will emus try to stomp or chase them away? I would love that if so lol. Can Emus free range/ eat grass, or would they need a big enclosure. Ideally, I'd like to have a shelter for them at night/during bad weather, but let them free range during the day. It sounds like they might bother chickens, and that combuned with my small dog, maybe baby emus would be the best option. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Dog should have enough sense to get along with emoooz.
Coyotes will likely be able to kill the emus because the emus’ movement is constricted – they will flee long distances in the wild.
You will build a shelter. Emoo will largely ignore it.
I guess that the chicken-stompin’ thing is about space. The less space, the more danger to chickens.
Can emus free range? Well . . . if they have enough room; but even though thirty acres is a sufficiency for pet birds, it’s a postage stamp in respect of free ranging. Wild emus range across v. v. large areas to get enough food. Just here – the rothschildis here are tame-wild – get grass and seeds and flowers and fruit from the old orchard and scotch thistles and lilly pillies.
