This is my first year keeping chickens and I'm just starting to get eggs. Although I had heard of "the egg laying song" chickens produce when laying, I didn't realize it would be so loud and boisterous! Are mature egg layers as noisy as new laying hens?

With the cacophony of cackling going on today, I thought that there would be a half dozen eggs, but upon later inspection, there was only one! I believe only three of my eight hens are laying, the others have yet to start. Perhaps the others were cheering on the one egg producer, LOL!

Hey there coopdeville15

Tee hee … who would have thought that chickens could be so noisy? Roosters .. yep, but hens?

Just this morning, my little 6 month old Silkie mix ‘Crystal’ announced to the whole neighbourhood that she had laid an egg …. She is new to laying and it is all still pretty exciting for her.

Prior to her laying her egg, her ‘mumma’, ‘Cilla’ and matriarch of the flock announced to the whole neighbourhood that Crystal was in HER nest box .. this went on for a good hour! Poor little Crystal is trying to lay and Cilla is in the coop carrying on like the sky if falling!

Cilla’s nick name is Nike [Just Do It!]. She carries on for hours “gunna lay an egg .. gunna lay an egg .. gunna lay an egg” … silence for 30-60 minutes while she does the deed and then “laid an egg .. laid an egg .. laid an egg!”

When Crystal’s sister, KiKi laid her first egg she sang the egg song and the whole flock joined in with her .. I really do think they were celebrating
