I would say with confidence that hens (not the roos!) are a whole lot quieter than dogs! They might have their chatty moments, but when confident and satisfied they make the cutest noises that (in my opinion) are as relaxing as the sound of a water fountain. It is quite interesting to hear the broad repertoire of chicken sounds some of which are super sweet and some of which sound kind like mutterings from a little dinosaur.
When I got chickens, I wish someone would have told me they were soloud!!! I have no roos, but with these hens, who needs 'em?? They Bawk Bawk Bakawk so loud, I can't stand to be in the coop with them when they cut loose!! Don't let anyone tell you hens are quiet!!! They can be as loud as any other critter I know. I'm in an urban situation too and my village clerk said "sure get chickens and you'll be okay as long as no one complains"...then I looked up the ordinance and it says NO CHICKENS in the village. So, my girls are on borrowed time....but so far (knocking on wood here) no complaints. All the neighbors dogs are loud and their kids are worse, but so far no one has said anything about my chickens.
