Are house birds (finches, canaries, etc) a good idea?

1.Do finches require a large cage? I have plenty of room in my room for a large cage if they need it.

Finches appreciate a very large cage. They can live in quite small accommodations but really should have a place where they can fly - not so much up and down as back and forth if space is an issue in your home. They love to live in colonies and as long as they have enough space get along quite well, although mixing species is not always a good idea.

2.Are they soo loud that they will keep me up during the night?

Mine go to sleep at dusk and wake up at dawn. I have about forty.

3.Are they friendly/trainable?

Mine are friendly and inquisitive but not trainable. I have zebras, societies, and stars.

4.Do they require a lot of money to own?

I spend A LOT on food, but then I have a lot of birds. There is the cost of the best quality seed mix, Herb Salad from Twin Beaks Aviary, cuttle bones and millet sprays, and silk flowers for their cages. I have folks give me newspapers for their cage floor so that's not an expense.

5.What is your honest opinion on finches, budgies, parakeets, canaries, etc.?

I love the wee ones. I have canaries, finches and parakeets. Be prepared for A LOT OF MESS!!!!!! feathers, seed hulls and dust. A LOT. LOT. LOT.
