Hi!
One of my chickens who has recently started molting has been kind of lunging and has plucked out a couple feathers of another one of my chickens. They're both usually really sweet and have never pecked or had a problem with the other. Sunny (the one who is molting) is a Buff Orpington so hearing what a nice and docile breed that is I was really surprised she would act like that. Is it normal for molting hens to act like this? I've pet and held her and she isn't acting like she is in pain. Is there anything I can do so she isn't so on edge? Thank you! :D

Molting chickens may be cranky but mine usually just act a little slow and tired when they are in a heavy molt. They nap a little more during the day and just aren't quite themselves for a bit. The molt itself drains them a bit and all those new pin feathers coming in can be uncomfortable. I just make sure mine have good nutrition and offer some extra protein during molt.
